It’s estimated over 50% of industrialized population suffer from Hemorrhoids in one fashion or another - oddly enough, this number falls to 3% in Third World countries (Burkitt, D. P., 1972). I guess I got the short end of the stick on this one, but I am not alone, so did Napoleon, Jimmy Carter (former US President), Sharon Osborne and even Darryl Strawberry among many others. Odds are that even YOU have them! My odyssey with Hemorrhoids first began about 9 months ago when for the first time, I began having a little blood left over after feeding the Cantin Throne.
It started out with a drop and never thought anything of it, then after a week straight, I reviewed my diet and exercise regiment to see what changed (nothing did). After 3 weeks of this BS, I was headed straight to the clinic- blood and stool aren’t bed fellows in my book. Never had any pain (in this regard I am lucky), I am very fit, 29 years old and have a very good diet high in fiber, other then stress due to running a few companies - my life is great! Well, without looking at me, the doc told me I had internal Hemorrhoids, now - I did search on the net with my symptoms and Hemorrhoids where the most likely cause but so is colorectal cancer, so wanting to be safe, I booked an appointment for an Endoscopy. About two weeks later, I was sitting at the clinic anxious to get myself examined, the doctor had something come up and said he wanted to send me for a Colonoscopy after reviewing my medical records. Knowing this was the gold standard for if there was ANYTHING wrong with me, I was glad - about a month later (with over 2 months of bleeding under my belt), I was laying on the doctors table getting checked up - literally.
Now, for those of you who have never had a colonoscopy, it really isn’t that bad - it’s sounds far worse then it really is - of course, the Demerol I requested didn’t hurt either
The procedure took about 30 minutes, it’s pretty neat actually, you get to see the whole thing on TV- just when you think there isn’t any more room “in there”, the doc shoves up another bunch of hose. Suffice it to say, I was happy when it was over for two reasons, main one is I am 100% fine (it was Hemorrhoids) and the other is I have an experience to share with others of how important it is to get a regular colonoscopy no matter your age, especially after you start to hit middle age.
I have heavily modified my diet to include way more fiber (in addition to Original Metamucil every morning and before going to bed), changed my exercise routine, do more cardio, drink tones of water in addition to a number of other changes. I told everybody I know about the procedure and telling them to also get checked up - as with many health issues, you don’t know you have it until you start to feel symptoms. This is a problem because sadly it’s often too late if you are diagnosed with colorectal cancer to do much about it. It’s a leading cause of death among baby boomers and is easily preventable with regular check “ups”.
