The mouth is the gateway to health in two major ways, obviously the first one is nutrient acquisition so your body can function. But another aspect that is often overlooked is how it acts as a highway for bacteria, viruses and other baddies directly into your bloodstream.
First lets back up a little, the mouth is a moist, warm environment loaded with a jackpot of freely available resources up for grabs - a fantastic breading ground! There is a constant war going on in your mouth both above and below your gum line. Food breaking down into acids that slowly attack you enamel, bacteria & micro organisms feeding on food stuffs and burrowing into teeth, virus & molds spreading and multiplying. Each tooth is nourished by the bloodstream via their root, if you have poor dental health, such as gum disease, cracked teeth, cavities etc- you are giving all the above organisms direct access to your bloodstream.
Why is access to the bloodstream such a vital thing for parasites? Going back to the highway analogy, if they gain access they can drive anywhere they want and propagate. Put another way, your giving a PIN number to your bank account to a thief. You open your self up to a host of serious and long term health conditions. Lets clarify this with an extreme example, HIV (which causes AIDS) needs access to the bloodstream to propagate. A bad tooth or oral infection mixed in with the wrong person and you can catch it!
Its not all doom and gloom, here is the great part, you can actively prevent and even reverse bad oral health. Brush your teeth, use a mouth wash and floss regularly- then go to the dentist at least every 6 months for a checkup and professional cleaning. I go to a Periodontist every 3 months myself - I actually look forward to it and I am sure my mouth is happy after each visit!
Remember, health starts with your mouth!
