Jon Cantin: Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef!

I am one of the 30 000 potential applicants to the Tourism Queensland competition for Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef position! Without delay, here is the video.

Video Transcript

My name is Jonathan Cantin and you’re looking at your next caretaker!

I have a University Degree in Biogeography, I studied everything from corals to rock formations and I’m also a teacher.

A little over two years ago, I sold everything I had for the paradise of Cairns, Australia on a Working Holiday Visa. I explored the local area and went up to Cape Tribulation with nothing but a tent and many cans of beans. I have had the pleasure of exploring Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines, in addition to my home country, Canada!

I have a Pilot, motorcycle and golf cart Licenses, open water certificate as well as a black belt in Karate. I would love to be on Hamilton Island in August for the Hamilton Island Race Week.

I have been nominated for two Entrepreneur of the Year awards, one of which I won. In my spare time, I love designing on-demand products, motivating others with my blogs and mountain climbing. I am an avid photographer, enthusiastic writer, absolutely LOVE life and the opportunity it presents to me.

My home is the world and I thank you for your time and consideration!

I put a link to JonCantin.com on the video so the reviewing panel can easily find-out more about me and I can use the site to market myself for the wildcard position as well.

Applying Early

Originally, I was going to spent a few weeks making something absolutely amazing but after I saw news reports that Tourism Queensland may limit their applications to 30 000 entries, rightly or wrongly, I decided I simply couldn’t take the chance of having a great presentation with nowhere to send it to. They are swamped already, have applications coming from all corners of this world and my guess is that they can hit 30 000 absolutely anytime, including today.

About the Best Job in the World

Tourism Queensland is selecting one, very lucky person, from around the world, to work among one of the most beautiful regions and islands in Australia! I would LOVE the opportunity to be that person, hence why I applied. The job entails blogging, video production, publicity and a host of other things geared towards having both an amazing time and promoting the region as much as possible. The “job” includes a beautiful rent-free home during the six month, 150 000$AU contract in addition to experiences that will surely make whomever wins, headline news around the world. Throw instant fame into the mix and it’s no wonder why so many people are applying for this position that their servers crashed a few days ago processing the applicants!

Why I think I can get this position

To begin with, I have the educational background with a University Degree in BioGeography (Biology + Geography) and have taught people of all ages over the past decade. I am a self-starter who built many very innovative and successful companies that have a global reach and even better, I am young enough not to require living in a location near a hospital yet old enough to know my limits with a body that can do whatever I set my mind towards doing! I have extensive marketing experience both in direct sales and across many cultures as well. I love the outdoors, drove everything from a plane to a motorcycle and love adventure!

Where can YOU apply?

Competition is fun, the more people applying, the better it will be for all of us applying as it makes the achievement all the more spectacular should I be nominated to be the next Hamilton Island Caretaker. You can see a complete job description on the Tourism Queensland website and find out more about the job at Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef.

Richard St. John’s 8 Secrets of Success

I wish achieving success was as easy as this picture demonstrates.

I wish achieving success was as easy as this picture demonstrates.

If you ever wanted to become successful, here are Richard St. John’s 8 Secrets of Success that will give you a glimpse into what you need to achieve the life of your dreams.

Methodology

Richard St. John studied the question “What Leads to Success” for seven years, his results were gathered by interviewing 500 successful people. Without further delay, here is all you need:

PASSION

If you don’t love what you do, don’t do it.

DO IT FOR LOVE, NOT MONEY

Money comes as a result of love, not the drive for an ever increasing bank statement.

WORK

Lazy and procrastination aren’t in the successful persons vocabulary.

GOOD

Become the leader in your field

PRACTICE

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!

FOCUS

Set your mind to be like an arrow going for a bullseye

PUSH

Push yourself mentally, physically and in every other way to become better… this is where shyness and self-doubt really allow some to achieve greatness.

SERVE

Provide value for others, becoming a millionaire takes time and lots of customers who will each give you their small piece of the pie.

IDEA

No idea is too crazy if you believe it’s possible.

PERSIST

Never give-up and never let yourself down… failure is a great teacher and tormentor in one.

The Bottom Line

Common sense mixed with a little stubbornness and craziness goes a long way towards achieving your goals.

Bob Parsons’s Top 10 Keys to Success 2008

Bob Parsons, Founder of GoDaddyThe founder of GoDaddy has had tremendous success online as a domain registrar, he risked everything he earned from the sale of his company Parsons Technology, turning his 64 million dollar buyout to what will soon be a billion dollar company. Without further ado, here is his top 10 keys (suggestions) for success in 2008.

10: Never listen to advertising experts

The reason for GoDaddy’s success is doing everything that it was told not to do by agencies, the more people say you shouldn’t do something, the more you should do it. People generally fear change, they don’t want to make waves so becoming an agent of change is the only way to get any type of attention no matter your field.

9: Surround yourself with beautiful, intelligent and successful women

Half of the world’s population is female yet if you attend enough board meetings, you will quickly realize that these statistics don’t hold true in the executive world (sadly). I would easily argue that women are our smarter half and a company without at least 50% of the top management that isn’t one is missing out on huge opportunities.

8: Take care of your employees and give to charity

Employees leave a company because of stress but if you provide a good working environment that is fun, challenging and rewarding, even at lower pay then a competitor, they will stay with you. Charity is also always a great thing, once you can afford to do so.

7: It’s never too late to get a motorcycle but always wear your safety gear

I got my motorcycle license a few years back, the freedom that you experience driving on the road is tremendous, cars are so boxed that I got to the point where I actually hated being inside of one. Driving a motorcycle gives you instant feedback about the environment, the flexibility to move on a dime and just pure pleasure of the open road… something lost in cars and trucks.

6: Earn a Ph.D. in International Relations so you can become the head of ICANN

A degree is only worth as much as you do with it, ICANN is just about the most useless organization out there, they are experts at conducting meetings in exotic locations that produce absolutely nothing. Each time somebody registers a domain, they send a few cents to these guys who wine and dine on our efforts and provide anything but leadership or vision for the online industry.

5: Figure out what “Brad” does in GoDaddy

An inside joke but if you have an employee or somebody who really serves no value to your company, no matter your affiliation, time to let them go unless you can afford to do otherwise. Same goes with software and hardware, if it doesn’t have a use, then there is no purpose in supporting it any longer.

4: Figure out what “Yahoo” actually does

Yahoo use to be known as a search engine, now it’s morphed into a huge conglomerate but unlike General Electric, they are experts at buying up overpriced companies then shutting them down. They lack a vision, purpose and to be quite frank, are headed for the same fate as AOL… oblivion.

3: Let the devil within you come out every once in a while

Living life on the straight and narrow is nice but it’s good to get out of your shell or comfort zone every once in a while. When was the last time you did something crazy? If you can’t remember, time to do it again.

2: Never, ever, buy a Zune

Hmmm… let me see, Microsoft is an expert at creating loss leaders, they have the Xbox franchise which looses money hand over fist, more software packages then I can count which do little but offer pale imitations of other software products and are sitting on a huge pile of cash. Microsoft has their operating system (XP) that is their backbone and Office, otherwise, everything else has been a dismal failure… why? Well, they got too much money and I think they fear loosing it, so instead of making waves inside of new industries, they are stuck taking cautious approaches towards everything… which leads to mediocrity. If you aren’t in an industry to shake it up, don’t go into it… the Zune (so far) is no different. Let me put this another way, if you own stock in Microsoft, how much has it grown over the past few years compared to a company that does take chances such as Google?

1: Be Godaddy’est in everything you do

The definition of Godaddy’est is simply the ability to live on the fine edge between decency and absurdity. It’s a fine line between being labeled a mad man vs a crazy man, if you live your life on that edge, sometimes you get burned but more often then not, you will progress faster. Take chances, take risks and more importantly, enjoy the trip while it lasts.

The Bottom Line

Follow your gut, more often then not, it will prove right.

Good News / Bad News: You can change your fate… BUT YOU MUST START NOW!

Change takes time... and dedicationThere is so much absent mindedness in our society with regards to our own health, everyday, it seems, news reports counter what they said just the previous week regarding how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I hope this gives you food for thought ;-)

The Bad News: Neglect + Abuse = Early Death

I find it easier to separate the body from the mind, they both enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship, if you neglect one, the other suffers as well but the opposite is also true.
A growing proportion of the people in the industrialized world treat their dogs better then their own bodies. They feed it crap, give it little exercise and wonder why after decades of abuse, why their bodies systematically begin to fall apart leading to a premature death.

We keep hearing this almost everyday, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, many forms of cancer all are conditions are getting worse but what isn’t mentioned is that that they are caused mostly by lifestyle choices done over a lifetime. Change your lifestyle will lead to a change in life which only gets bigger as you age.

The Bad News: Things take time & Effort

If you are like a growing proportion of the worlds population, you have taken your body for granted for so long that it no longer knows how to react to physical or mental stresses that you NEED to place on it for lasting change. This will mean that to achieve realistic results, you will have to work harder then somebody who treated their body like a temple with proper diet and exercise. This is why it is always vital to get a full medical checkup before getting yourself into a serious (I mean serious) change in lifestyle. Simply changing the chairs on the Titanic is not what you need, you need a brand new ship going in the other direction.

The Bad News: Money cannot buy you health

All those magic potions, supplements and miracle powders will not get you the body of your dreams, they can “help” a little but they are absolutely no substitute for hard work – which includes sweat, sacrifice and monitoring. If you are serious about change, don’t waste your hard earned money.

The FANTSTIC NEWS: YOU CAN CHANGE THINGS!

It is NEVER too late to change the fate of your body, if you find yourself lethargic with what you have done to your body, don’t fear or drive yourself insane keeping the same habits that got you where you are now but expecting different results.

The body is an incredibly adaptive machine, you have the body you “enjoy” now because you CHOOSE to make it that way and the great news about this is you can also CHOOSE to change it into any other type you want.

Are you severely obese and wish to have a slim body? Surgery is not the answer, habit transformations is… right now your body is a reflection of your mental well-being… you are sick and need professional help. Having surgery will fix your outer being but your insides will remain the same, hence why many people gain back the weight they lost no matter the method within a few years.

Are you very slim and want to gain a little muscle mass, again, not a problem, evaluate your diet and exercise regimen and make a few changes, those pounds will come relatively quickly.

Your body will initially fight change but once the mind and the body are working together towards a goal you have, their synergy will make what you want into a reality.

The Bottom Line

Take all the information you hear in the media with a grain of salt pinched with a heavy addition of skepticism. Moderation is always the key to life long health.

My New Years Resolution 2005

More to life then moneyEverybody I know makes a New Years Resolution, some people follow through, others quickly forget them. I have realized from my few short years on this planet that keeping it as simple as possible usually yields the most dramatic and permanent changes – here are mine in priority order:

1. improve my health
2. improve the lives of people around the world

Pretty short huh- I truly believe that taking care of my own personal health is a selfless act- how can I help educate, help & inspire others if my own body and daily actions demonstrate the opposite? It is like having a doctor tell you to stop smoking when they are also addicted to nicotine.

Trying to make a difference in other peoples lives takes a lot of energy, time and can wear you down – unless your body and mind are strong enough. Physical toughness is but a shell compared to mental vigor required to get through life.

I tend to focus on things that I can actively control as well, wishing for “World Peace” is a very noble cause but what can I actually do to put a serious dent into it? Very little if anything at all- some causes are simply over my head. I also don’t place financial goals, although in the past I did this, it became more a source of stress then satisfaction. I have come to adopt a “seriously easy going” approach to live, I hear this often from Jamaicans and you know what- they are onto something! Whether I make a few million this year or a fraction of that, I will be happy with myself regardless.

I really enjoy taking time out my schedule to write these weekly issues, the number one request I get from members and non-members alike is to make it more interactive so that they can join in the discussions. Your wish shall come true very shortly, along with a new system to allow you to do the same ;-)

2006 will be an amazing year! Wishing you all the best!
