dark side of health

This guy must be using salt and baking soda!Well, it has been one month now since I completely stopped using toothpaste, my oral hygiene regimen of rinsing my mouth with baking soda / salt twice a day followed by brushing my teeth with plain water twice a day seems to have actually IMPROVED things!

Stumbling upon a far more effective alternative to mouthwash

I use to use mouthwash but it seems that, after a few hours, the “ickiness” would always return and overnight, well, in the morning I felt like I had drank from a swamp the night before. All those chemicals moving around in my mouth also don’t inspire much confidence considering all the health issues people are having later in life due to environmental and lifestyle choices followed over a lifetime. There HAD to be alternatives, I read a few online articles a few years back and stumbled upon the “salt” rinsing. It’s quite easy, fill a 1/2 cup of hot water and mix in about a tablespoon of salt and a teaspoon of baking soda. The result? Well, the best damn mouthwash you can ever have at a fraction of the price of what is being “marketed” as the best. Throw the rest into an oral irrigator and your mouth will be as clean as an emergency room floor (before the patient comes in of course).

Toothpaste, for all it’s wonders, is actually rather useless

I was brought-up being “marketed” by dentists and businesses that if I don’t use toothpaste, my teeth would fall-out and gingivitis was just around the corner… what a bunch of BS! Standing-up to commercial forces even in the face of conventional wisdom is actually a fantastic habit to have! Most of toothpaste ingredients are geared towards polishing, considering it’s thrown-out a few seconds after being “applied”, it makes you realize how either incredibly potent (ei: dangerous) or useless it really is. Consider toothpaste is a rather recent invention, I can safely say that it isn’t worth the status it has been given.

Results after one month

After one month of the no-toothpaste lifestyle, my gums have went from a slight redness along the gum-line to pink! My mouth always feels fresh and clean even after a meal or a few hours of heavy exercise. Even better… “tartar build-up” is gone and my teeth are actually WHITTER! What can I conclude? Well, I wish I started this regimen 30 years ago! It has saved me money and proven incredibly effective! Before you ask your dentist about following this regimen, realize that he or she, although a professional, is still being marketed rather heavily by companies that want you to use their oral products. Try this regimen for a month, go see your dentist, ask them if they see (or you feel) a difference THEN tell them what you have done!

Is Listerine environmentally friendly?

I have nothing against Listerine or other products but when a far more effective (and cheap) method exists that is environmentally friendly, why are we being marketed bogus junk? Just think of the chemical and logistical footprint that a simple product like Listerine has on the environment? A lot of wasted energy to produce an inferior product… that is mass-produced and marketed as THE BEST when it really falls rather short. I have no qualms about the “chemicals” in my salt/baking-soda mouthwash but who knows the long-term ramifications of the chemicals found in most toothpastes and mouthwashes these days. I think our governments have truly failed us on so many levels, it’s astonishing how much of our daily lives are influenced on a subconscious level by marketing whose focus is on profits rather than co-existing within our environment.

The Bigger Issue: The government doesn’t care

If the government really cared about our health, things such as alcohol, junk food (including TV diners), tobacco products… the list goes on, would simply not be available for consumption much less marketed to us on a daily basis. If the government really cared about the environment, mass-production of useless products when environmentally friendly alternatives existed wouldn’t be profitable. If the government really cared about it’s citizens, it would put a higher priority on physical education (government run gyms, school programs etc) instead of promoting a lifestyle of stagnation. Governments are there to help guide a population regardless of economic considerations but this sadly has changed where financial considerations have a higher priority than of the people it “should” be representing.

The Bottom Line

Only by standing-up against conventional wisdom can truth be discovered.

A dentists dream!Drug addicts all seem to develop specific physical and habitual characteristics as they spiral down into the hole of addition; Meth addicts seem to show these traits in an especially ugly form! I believe knowledge is power, I may dedicate my life towards my passion but I also try to educate myself about those who dedicate theirs towards self-destruction. Why? If you don’t know how bad things can become, they you cannot fully appreciate the gift of not living that type of life can be!

What is Meth?

Meth is a nervous system stimulant which gives its users an instant rush of energy, they feel like they are 10ft tall and can do anything. It is also goes by the name “ice”, “crystal” and “glass” for its smokable forms while the pill forms go by “billy whizz”, “speed”, “sulphate”, “fast”, “uppers”, “powder” and “crank”. It is made up of mix of commonly available, hazardous chemicals, as such it can be mass produced relatively easily and requires no importation such as other hard drugs.

How is Meth taken?

Meth can be taken in various forms such as powder, pill, injectables and I am sure there are other creative ways addicts have found in order to receive a high from this awful drug.

Why do people take Meth?

When the dangerous mix of peer pressure, low self-esteem and easy availability come together, the perfect storm begins. I can easily say that these are the same pressures that create many other types of addicts from nicotine to alcoholics.

What happens after a user stops use?

Well, the reason they took the drugs was to feel 10ft tall, once off, they receive the opposite effect and feel like they belong 6ft under. With prolonged use, Meth addicts become extremely paranoid and develop a host of traits that would make a schizophrenic appear normal. Like other drugs, there is also an adaptation that the body does to cope, meaning more regular and higher doses are required to achieve the same effect.

What do meth addicts look like?

These aren’t pretty pictures, it shows you what drugs can do to you in their extremes. Note that cigarettes and alcohol have the same effects but they are to a lesser extreme and more internalized.

Governments “War on Drugs” commercials: The Montana Meth Project Ads

I may be wrong, but I believe these commercials where actually produced by a concerned individual who had enough with seeing the government do little in the face of the Meth epidemic that was happening in his city. Hopefully these scare the shit out of you… if they don’t, you have deeper problems.

The ugly physical effects of Meth

Like other hard drugs, Meth has a profound effect on the physical body. As the substance is completely toxic to the body, it tries to excrete these substances through the skin’s pores, which tend to get infected. This specific trait seems to be specific to Meth users. In addition, many Meth users end up with mouths that would make even the local dentist freak-out! The internal organs are also taxed beyond recovery most of the time with prolonged use, which means that you don’t only age much faster, but you are really screwing yourself internally as well. Any type of drug use leads to malnutrition, lack of exercise and the usual culprits that don’t have any positive impact on living a long, healthy life.

The Bottom Line

Drugs, of any kind, produce nothing of any positive value to a life.

Can I become the world's strongest man?I got a comment today from a reader of the article I wrote titled LegendaryLife Profile: Mariusz Pudzianowski in which I stated that although bodybuilding has seen huge strives in physique, the same gains in strength in the power lifting world haven’t been achieved. This is the answer I would have given to my younger self knowing what I know now.

Question from Australia:

What I like to know is that these people (as you had mentioned) are from a specific gene pool. Is it possible for a person who does not have the genetics such as theres to achieve strength and fitness not to their level but close to it?

Answer:

Let me be the first to tell you I am not a doctor, sports physician nor expert in the fields of genetics or optimal training so my answer is based off the discussions I have with athletes of all ages, 15 years of studies in the field and personal experiences. Nobody wants to be “second strongest man” so I will re-phrase your question. “Even with bad genetics, can I become the world’s strongest man?” My answer to you is both yes and no. Take this advice at your own risk and don’t even consider following any of it until you understand the WHY behind it.

Yes, you can

Let me be the first to tell you that genetics play a large role in how much strength you can achieve but what is a far bigger factor is your personal ambition to achieve this goal. Some of the most gifted people genetically can amount to absolutely nothing simply due to a lack of desire. If you think you can become the strongest man in the world, then you have a heck of a shot better chance then the average person with achieving this goal. The more important question I have to ask is are you willing to do what it takes? I have met more then my fair share of bodybuilders, gifted athletes and just freaking huge gym rats, by the age of 35 have shot their joints to hell. You see, muscles are capable of growing bigger and stronger up to a certain point far faster then your joins or ligaments can. There are guys who take steroids who can double their strength within six months but let me be the first to tell you that you wouldn’t want to spend one day in those bodies a decade later. Read up on past sports heroes, pro-wrestlers and even great power lifters, what you will find out usually isn’t anything to brag about. Many need hormone replacement therapy the rest of their lives due to steroid abuse, they need a constant stream of sleeping pills and pain killers just to get through the day and their personal lives are a mess. The body can only take so much abuse before it begins to shut off, hence why steroids, growth hormone and a host of other drugs including pain killers must be used on a regular basis just to keep the momentum going or gains from fading. There are exceptions to every rule, but if you really push yourself beyond your physical limits, you will pay a price one way or another.

Ron Coleman for instance looks like the healthiest person in the world, he is HUGE, POWERFUL and quite intelligent but he is completely dependent on “supplements” the rest of his life. He is the result of fantastic genetics meeting incredible determination with lots of help. He is like the 0.1% cream of the crop with an extremely gifted body but he has also been working out most of his life, just look at the photos of him as he progressed in bodybuilding and you will see a slow progression from well built into HULK over an extended period of time. He has earned, in every sense of the word, the body he has but I wouldn’t want to be in his body if he ever reaches the age of 80.

Remember that only in this century was the 5 minute mile broken, somebody had the will to make what others said was impossible, the next day many others achieved exactly the same goal… moral of this story is if you truly believe you can do it, it will happen.

No, you can’t

Now for the cold hearted reality, if you are unwilling to take the drugs, unable to handle the mental stress of lifting huge amounts of weights and don’t have the muscular or bone structure that is capable of supporting massive amounts of pressure then you will never become the strongest man in the world nor anywhere close to it. You may be an incredible one in a 10 million man exception but odds are that you are not. We are all limited by our genetics, sure, drugs allow us to somewhat morph from one body type into another but the underlying structure that supports everything cannot change enough to turn an extreme ectomorph (skinny, has trouble building and maintaining muscles, long arms and legs) into an extreme mesomorph (muscular, builds muscle very easily and athletic build). Your body type is a birthright given by your ancestors, hence why I believe the next revolution in augmenting body types must come at the genetic level BEFORE the body has had time to form itself fully, soon after conception in a petri dish.

Here is my advice to you

I don’t believe in hiding the facts from anybody but before you do anything, learn to eat, train and build goals for yourself to make your dream of being almost as strong as the Bill Kazmaiers of this world a probability. I am assuming your in your teenage years, so don’t even consider taking steroids, growth hormone or any other supplements as they will screw you up big time (protein and creatine are fine). Your body is swimming in testosterone, this is THE TIME to take full advantage of this, eat and train like a madman, strive for 10 pounds of muscle PER YEAR. Work on your foundation, hit the gym and read all you can about bodybuilding and improving your health. After a few years of doing this and once you have stopped growing (your growth plates have sealed), if you still want to be the worlds strongest man, then additional supplementation is a must. I know it isn’t politically correct to say this but you don’t become a 280 pound man with huge muscles by just eating oatmeal every morning. Be warned though, once you take this path there is NO going back. You will have the body of a God for maybe 10-15 years if things are done well but expect a future of erectile dysfunctions beginning after your first cycle even with post cycle therapy (clomid, nolva etc.). Expect to become addicted to pain killers and don’t expect to be in any kind of healthy shape, if your body doesn’t pop beforehand, in your senior years. From one guy to another, to be blunt, if you have the body of a God but can’t do anything with a woman you are deeply attracted to in bed, it will tear your mind apart and crying like a little boy.

My goal is to live to 150 years old, as such, steroids, growth hormones and many other supplements are in my future but I won’t even consider the possibility until I am mid to post manopause (male version of menopause) in my early 40s… even then, these will be maintenance levels of maybe 80-100 mg a week of testosterone, nowhere near abuse levels that are exponentially higher. Sure I will end up with size 18 shoes and cranium the size of a basketball by the time I die but this will be my choice to make. It’s your body and your choice but I would advise you heavily not to even touch drugs of any kind until you have reached at least 200 pounds in bodyweight with a single digit body fat percentage in your early 20s, naturally being the strongest guy in the biggest gym in your town. If you cannot achieve this, then I am sorry but you simply don’t have the genetics to be THE strongest man in the world, you will become strong, no doubt about it… but not THE strongest, becoming instead, best friends with your neighborhood dialysis machine by the time you hit 30 if not sooner with no cute girlfriend or wife to soak up your tears after realizing you just threw away your life.

Where the need for male strength all began

I believe that men, at some primal level, are attracted to being the biggest in the land. For instance, I am slightly taller then Mariusz Pudzianowski but he outweighs me by 100 pounds of pure muscle. If we met in a jungle and had to fight for the last woman on Earth, unless I had a gun, I wouldn’t stand a chance in hell even if I had a baseball bat. Since the dawn of time, animals (including us) have fought for reproductive opportunities for that one incredible, one in a million, female… before wealth came into the picture, which provides security in our modern age, physical prowess was the deciding factor. Women want a man that can protect her and her child from danger. For instance, if you where in a jungle full of tigers, would you want to have a child with Woody Allen or Arnold Schwarzenegger?

The Bottom Line

I know I probably swamped you with more information then you can probably comprehend, I tried to keep it as simple as possible. Your job now is NOT to follow my advice blindly but understand the WHY behind my response. This isn’t even touching the surface of what you need to know, the answers are out there, it’s your job is to find them. Best of luck!

Check out Big Ron Coleman’s Website to get some inspiration as to what IS possible, he IS the strongest bodybuilder out there right now and I think his body looks better then Bill Kazmaier’s or Mariusz Pudzianowski’s for that matter.

Outsourcing PregnancyIn North America and to a lesser degree in Europe, when you call customer service, more often then not, your being patched directly through to an Indian call center to handle your requests. Taxes with companies such as H&R Block are also subcontracted to India including a lot of manufacturing, resource allocation and even strategic development. If you have some money and don’t have time to become pregnant yourself, it only makes sense to outsource that to India as well!

Pregnancy

It’s no secret that the entire process of pregnancy takes a number of the woman, that, till now, was simply a birthright, there where no other alternatives. The hormonal, psychological and physical toll or pregnancy stay with her the rest of her life along with the stretch marks. Pregnancy isn’t without it’s risks but as women push their child bearing years into their mid to late 30s, infertility becomes a growing issue as well. India serves an unlimited number of young, economically disadvantaged women who are willing, if the price is right, to become a surrogate. The process occurs through in-vitro fertilization (sorry guys) using the man’s sperm and the woman’s eggs, they are then implanted into the surrogate. The end result? Your child in every sense of the word, sharing no genetic material with the surrogate and your wife or girlfriend gets to keep her amazing body, having a child without ever taking a day off work nor pain associated with giving birth.

Womb for Rent

Now, this surrogate isn’t getting pregnant with your child for the fun of it, she expects to be financially compensated. In India, a woman can expect around $4 500 for the entire process, not a lot by First World standards but this is 15 years of wages for the average maid! She gets pregnant and wins essentially a lottery that sets her up on a better path in the future. She wins as she gets out of relative poverty, the family wins as they get a child out of the transaction. Both winners right?

Self-Induced problem

It’s no secret that one of the major factors causing infertility is age, the longer people wait before starting a family, the harder it will be. A woman as at her peak reproductively in her 20s, out in nature, this isn’t a problem but in the real world, that is right before university, after high school! It seems nature hasn’t adapted fast enough to our ever changing world and now, couples the world over, are paying dearly for it. A woman having a child in her 20s, unless within a very secure relationship, has a higher chance of being marginalized the rest of her life. I wrote a few months back about my experiences working in Canada and Australia at minimum wage jobs, what I may not have mentioned is that the vast majority of the women that where there, you guessed it, started their family in their early 20s if not younger. They where mostly divorced or never got married to begin with, most of them hated their jobs as much as their lot in life. For men, although we can have children all our lives, our peak is in our mid 20s. It isn’t just infertility rates that increase with age by the way, genetic defects rise as well such as Autism, Down Syndrome and a host of other conditions that a family would want to avoid at all costs.

Moral Issues

This isn’t just happening in India, it’s happening around the world, even in the industrialized world so I am not picking on India specifically. The biggest question you need to ask in these circumstances is that if the woman was economically advantaged, would she want to become a surrogate for a family she has no relationship with? Although there are exceptions, I bet 95% of the time the answer will be “Hell No”. So, the question must be asked, is renting a strangers womb for 9 months a moral act? I know that on the streets of Bangkok (Thailand), you can rent a young woman for $20US for a 24 hour period (use your imagination) so is this much different? How much different is renting a woman for 9 months compared to a 24 hour period, or even buying a liver for that matter? These are poor women, who have no real choice, selling the only thing they have to try to better themselves. Alternatively, most people rent their brains and bodies 8 hours a day, so how is even this act different? I am not here to preach, but just think about this and feel free to share your comments.

The Bottom Line

There is no way around this, renting a person, now matter how well intentioned, is still renting a person.

True Success involves Self-EsteemAlthough a large segment of the worlds population has self-esteem issues, only a fraction of them have enough money to make changes to their physical image in order to try to improve them. Luckily, we also have positive role models in the area of self-esteem.

What is Self-Esteem?

Well, self-esteem is how you view yourself, your accomplishments and overall quality of yourself. Self-esteem peaks when you feel on top of the world without a care in the world and dives when you are worried everybody will see something that hardly anybody will notice about you. Self-esteem is essentially how you perceive the outside world feels about you.

Negative Self-Esteem

Money, fame and even good looks have little to do with how a person feels about themselves, and here are a few examples of the effects of negative self-esteem.

Micheal Jackson

Regardless of his media stunts, he has achieved INCREDIBLE success that I feel is what is leading towards his downfall. He achieved so much at such a young age and, being a perfectionist, has struggled to reach again with little traction compared to his incredibly high stratus at a younger age. He was once worth north of 200 million dollars, with fans all around the world and basically the King of Pop while today, he is relegated to the back pages of the Inquire or People Magazines. For all his accomplishments, he hasn’t been able to master the most important of all, himself. No amount of children, fame, fortune nor media attention has changed the fact that he has a chip on his shoulder that will probably haunt him until his final days. He was once a great role model for millions of aspiring fans around the world but I feel, in his present state, he is unable to fill those shoes even with his own shadow.

Jocelyne Wildenstein

A once very beautiful Swedish woman, Jocelyne was born in a middle class family but upped her way in the social elite by marrying Alec Wildenstein, whose family is worth about 10 billion dollars. She had two great kids, incredibly luxurious houses on just about every continent, a loving husband and more money then she could spend. When the marriage fell apart, it seems, so did she. Her escape was, like Micheal Jacksons, plastic surgery. Sadly, she put so much of her self-esteem deposits in her husbands bank account that she forever changed her look simply to try to win his heart back. It failed… and she has been living with the consequences ever since.

Anna Nicole Smith

She had more beauty then brains but all throughout her short live, she suffered from drug abuse of every kind. She had no personality, self-esteem of her own. She invested all her time and energy into getting the most out of life at the detriment of her own life. From cosmetic surgery to failed relationships, businesses and you name it, she, like the two celebrities above, suffered greatly psychologically. I am sure, before the fame and fortune came, she had some self-esteem within her but it seems as if it evaporated rather quickly.

Positive Self-Esteem

For some, their success seems almost based on the ability to either turn around personal self-esteem issues or simply continually building upon an already strong foundation.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

I have to admit, he is one of my many role models in life, he has the almost inhuman ability to write his own script for life, turning his predictions into reality with uncanny accuracy. If you look at Arnold’s life, one thing becomes very clear, his nick name “the Oak” is an impossibly strong foundation for where his self-esteem stands. He wants something, he makes it happen, no matter how impossible, how treacherous the path nor how many people doubt him. He is one of the ultimate go-getters who easily has earned every bit of luck and success he has fought so hard to achieve.

Sylvester Stallone

He isn’t the most handsome, isn’t the tallest (compared to the above two) nor did his speech impediment help him on the road to extreme success… but he did it! Talk about a strong foundation, he was broke in Hollywood but even when a studio exec offered him hundreds of thousands of dollars for his first Rocky movie script, he said no! He so much believed in himself that no matter how much somebody thought he was worth, he knew his value and dreams were worth so much more. Since then, he has achieved one fantastic success after another in various fields such as art, entertainment and even in his entrepreneurial activities.

Anthony Robbins

He began his career broke, obese and feeling like a truck ran him over and over a few years, turned himself around into the foundation that people around the world pay big bucks to try to emulate. He has his own island in Fiji, no lack of money and even though he went through a tough divorce at the peak of his success, was able to overcome those obstacles and re-invent himself. How did he do it? He did it by himself for himself, and that is why he has achieved the incredible success he so well deserves.

Self-Esteem: YOU

So, how do you feel about yourself? Do you feel like shit? Well, if you do, no matter what else is going on in your life, you need to get these issues resolved first and foremost. As you can see from the above examples, fame and fortune only seem to make things WORSE, not better. Self-esteem is the inner relationship with yourself, if you cannot make peace with it, it will quickly spiral into absolute dysfunctionality. Before you seek fame, fortune and the life you feel you deserve, you need to focus on making sure the foundation upon which YOU are built is sturdy enough to weather any earthquake that will come as you pursuit a path of success.

The Bottom Line

Wealth has huge responsibilities attached with it, are your self-esteem able to handle such weight?

A Balanced Meal!Americans spend over 40 billion dollars a year on potions, products and programs designed for a singular purpose – to loose weight. Ironically enough, the more Americans spend on loosing weight, the more weight they gain! Frontline has looked into this phenomena in it’s documentary Diet Wars.

Summary

I believe this is worth watching but if you don’t have time, here is a summary of the key points outlined in the documentary:

  • January is when most Americans think of shedding the weight
  • many obese people realize the damage they are doing to their health but simply cannot change their habits
  • heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, stroke, high cholesterol and cancer risk factors are all influenced by carrying excess weight
  • 2/3rds of Americans are overweight with most living in a state of denial
  • Pritikin diet consists of fruits, fish, vegetables, soy milk, beans, it’s basically an ultra-low calorie reduced diet
  • Atkins consists of eating all the fat you can while limiting the starches, fruits and cereals
  • Atkins contradicts everything the government and scientific community has told the public
  • Atkins works by reducing caloric intake, just like all diets that are effective
  • the anti-fat (low fat diet) dogma is difficult overcome
  • in the 90s, the food industry began removing fat from our foods (to reduce caloric intake and reduce weight of consumers)
  • all commercial foods are made up of protein, water, carbohydrates and fats but removing the fat from a product requires the addition of one of the other three (usually carbohydrates) which gives them the same calories as regular “non-low-fat” products
  • 3 000 calories of carbohydrates = 3 000 calories of fat
  • low fat era of the 90s caused Americans to before fatter then ever with a third being obese by the early 2000s
  • eating too much refined sugars (rice, white bread, pasta) cause sugar rushes which then causes the pancreas to over-compensate with insulin which in turn stimulates hunger
  • Atkins works by satisfying your hunger due to the high protein and fat content (it’s burned slowly by the body verses carbohydrates which are burned quickly)
  • saturated fat and cholesterol help clog up the bodies arteries
  • Harvard recorded the lifetime diets of health professionals and after 20 years of research they found out that saturated are animal fats are linked to heart disease and cancer but unsaturated fats from fish and vegetable oils help protect people from these conditions
  • unrefined carbohydrates are filling and nutritious while refined carbohydrates have the opposite on the effects on the body
  • nuts are very high in fat and protein but also very nutritious
  • South Beach Diet outsells Atkins now in the United States
  • 80-90% of people who loose weight from specialized diets gain it back within a year due to cravings and returning to old habits
  • Weight Watchers keeps the weight off longer then other plans due to the community support lacking from many other diet programs, it isn’t a diet, it’s a lifestyle change
  • Weight Watchers uses a buddy system, teamwork, to maintain weight loss
  • 65% of Americans are overweight or obese
  • Americans live in a dream world compared to our ancestors where food is plentiful and cheap without requiring physical activity to acquire it
  • childhood obesity rates are skyrocketing due to improper diet and lack of activity (some 12 year olds already have type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol)
  • one child in two within the United States is at risk of developing diabetes over their lifetime
  • most school cafeterias are full of junk food which works against their abilities to get a proper education
  • children don’t play outside as before, families don’t eat together and the television has become a baby sitters (societal values have changed)
  • sedentary lifestyle reduces calorie requirements by the body so even a normal diet can cause obesity
  • America On The Move promotes healthy weights by using pedometers, creating fun, goal orientated activities to loose weight
  • schools that cut out physical education to save funds are now returning towards physical activity as part of the school curriculum
  • food is an important part of American culture, which is why limiting food consumption is a difficult task for most Americans
  • all diets are gimics, long term changes are required after the initial weight loss and self-control isn’t a sexy marketing catch-phrase

My Dieting Views

The entire diet industry is made up of a lie, that of money. To be more specific, that you need to spend money to get the body you want… things couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead of giving your power to a third party, save your money and time, invest in yourself instead!

The Bottom Line

Permanent weight loss is easy if you are willing to change your lifestyle.

Herbals doesn't mean safeThe entire “wellness” industry has been on its BS binge for quite some time now, although herbs have been used for many millennia to “cure” conditions, it doesn’t mean they are effective beyond a placebo. Sure, there are exceptions but when you pit a pharmaceutical drug vs one sourced from “natural ingredients”, the pharmaceutical version is more often then not far more potent.

What are Herbal Remedies?

I haven’t heard anybody give me a definition for what exactly “Herbal Remedies” actually are? I visit trade shows and it seems everybody has their own self-serving definition of what a Herbal Remedy is and why their product is better then any pharmaceutical grade medications out there. As a result, here is my unbiased definition

Herbal Remedy: product sourced from many natural ingredients whose origins are dubious, it’s effectiveness relies heavily on both the placebo effect and on generational trust (it’s been used for thousands of years, so it must work safely). Often promoted as a supplement in modern times without any double blind clinically based studies to backup incredibly exaggerated marketing claims. Herbal Remedies are sold in a variety of formats, from homemade bags to pharmaceutical looking packaging at various price points that aren’t related to effectiveness nor quality. Some are effective but the vast majority are not, relying on a shotgun approach verses a laser one by the pharmaceuticals.

Natural cures for EVERYTHING!

The “wellness industry” likes to promote the reason why their “natural cures” aren’t widely available is due to pharmaceutical companies trying to protect their turf and corrupt government agencies getting in the way of healthy alternatives. I am sure there is some elements of that but while the pharmaceuticals must spend billions proving their product works before reaching the marketplace, the wellness industry is hell bent on not spending a dime on studies that would prove (more likely disprove) their effectiveness. Instead, they rely on pharmaceutical sounding words, testimonials, slick marketing and promises that they must know are over-the-top. Among the most successful out there is Mannatech but there are many more out there as well.

The Wellness Industry Circumventing a Paradox

I believe the entire “wellness industry” is in sort of a paradox, it cannot prove their product work in a clinical setting yet they cannot gain acceptance by the medical field without proving their product works. How to circumvent this seemingly endless paradox? Well, keep telling people they work, if you say something often enough, the general populous will eventually believe it’s a fact. Open any health magazine (Muscle & Fitness, Cosmopolitan, Runners World, Flex etc… ) and you will see this effort in full force, listen to the radio and you will hear the same, watch television and commercials are pushing useless herbal remedies as well.

Times article about potential dangers of herbal remedies

Dr. Sanjay Gupta wrote an interesting piece for Time which outlines the “wellness industry” in rather stark terms, here is a summary:

  • use of herbal supplements by the general public has jumped 83% in the past decade and is now worth 22.3 billion dollars a year!
  • most common mistake herbal remedy users make is believing the product actually works
  • 19% of herbal remedy users are trying to treat specific conditions, not general wellness and wellbeing
  • 2/3 of herbal preparations have never been clinically proven for effectiveness
  • 2002, the FDA put out a warning against the dangers of supplements using kava root due to its potential to cause liver damage
  • 2004, FDA banned ephedra after it was linked directly to over 100 deaths
  • Ayurvedic supplements (Indian and South Asian preparations) may be laced with heavy metals such as mercury and lead
  • Saint-John’s-wort has an anti-depressive effect but also interferes with some HIV medications and heart drugs like warfarin and digoxin

What to do?

Well, before you spend another dime on naturally sourced supplements, be sure to visit a doctor and share your concerns. He or she knows far more about health then either of us and can lead you in the right direction. Secondly, tell your doctor each and every medication you are taking, some herbals that do work interfere with pharmaceuticals. Thirdly, if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is, save your money.

The Bottom Line

Effective herbals may have their place in overall health but should never be taken in replacement or in conjunction with pharmaceuticals unless cleared by your health practitioner.

Weight Loss RobotsApparently MIT Media laps are hard at work creating a robot that will help you loose pounds and presumably keep the weight from coming back.

What ever happened to common sense?

I can see this being fantastic to remind people to take their medication or to help them live a full life but do we really need to waste resources creating a robot that takes the place of common sense? If you are obese or out of shape, this is a choice more often by not, the symptom of a problem far deeper then a simple robot slapping your hand as you eat out of proportion with your goals. Let’s face it, if you are too lazy to educate YOURSELF to YOUR benefit about nutrition, spending a few thousand dollars on a robot will simply give you yet another excuse as to why you aren’t achieving your weight goals. Technology, even the one behind myfoodcount.com is there to help you, the will power to succeed must come from your end.

Real Solutions to Weight Loss

What we need to do is mandate nutritional and exercise classes in all levels of schooling, from elementary to university. I am not talking about “this class is sponsored by Post Cereals” kinda thing neither! I mean teach people what a fat is, what a carbohydrate is, what sodium does to your body, the effects of a couch potato lifestyle etc… health is a wonderful and exciting field, marketing has made it into a dull one because there is more profit in selling gadgets then education. Remember the old saying “give a man a fish, he will eat for a day, show a man how to fish and he will eat forever”? Well, this is the same approach we should integrate for nutrition.

The Bottom Line

You only have one body, one mind and one life… give them the honor they deserve!

Red... how appropriate.Let’s face it, AIDS is going to be with us for at least the next half century if not more. The reason that HIV Disease has been such a successful virus around the world is because it exploits all the human weaknesses that make up our various civilizations. Each year, there are new promises made by scientists regarding eradication of this deadly virus but this simply leads to more knowledge being acquired regarding the complexity of this virus.

Summary: Part 1

I encourage you to view this program online but if you don’t have time, here is an extensive summary.

  • by the time HIV Disease was diagnosed in the United States, over 250 thousand people where infected, by the time it was diagnosed in Africa, millions where already infected
  • the AIDS virus is 150 times smaller than the size of the blood cell it attacks and eventually kills, progressively over several years, the body dies from an infection due to an overwhelmed (now severely compromised) immune system without anymore t-cells to combat infection
  • originally, most patients died within a few months upon diagnosis
  • June 1981, CDC reports in the MMWR the occurrence of a mysterious disease which will soon be labeled as AIDS
  • originally, infections where among healthy gay men who had a number of recreational drugs and sexual partners so the point of infection was very difficult to track down
  • infection diagnosis then spread through the Haitian community, the CDC couldn’t figure out the connection between the gay men in large cities and the Haitian Community in Florida
  • in Europe, infections began to show up in heterosexual couples who where not from Haitian backgrounds nor homosexual ones
  • November 1981, three drug users where diagnosed in New York with AIDS which later lead to an epidemic of AIDS within the drug communities
  • diagnosis of AIDS leads to becoming a social outcast within their peers, as this was mostly hitting the gay and drug communities, they where not a priority by the government (they didn’t care)
  • government didn’t want public tax dollars going towards helping people who deserved to die based on actions against the Laws of God
  • CDC warns that AIDS has entered the blood supply after a child becomes infected with AIDS
  • Hemophiliacs are the next group to be infected with AIDS en mass, CDC then realized that AIDS had to be a virus spread through sharing of bodily fluids
  • blood banks refuse to admit that AIDS could be spread from blood transfusions, even when faced with evidence by the CDC, it took two years before they began screening procedures, leading to 35 thousand confirmed new AIDS cases
  • President Reagan comes into power and institutes a 25% cut in funding to the CDC, leading to two years of stagnation in the AIDS epidemic
  • scientists had trouble finding the original source of AIDS, leads lead to the Congo
  • once scientists visit the Congo, they realize that woman can also be infected with AIDS, once this is reported to high ranking government officials, they still cannot put two and two together as the gay and drug user biased is systemic throughout the administration
  • Haitians where contracted by the now independent Congo once the Belgians left in the 1980s to teach the Congonese population, once they return, they infected many Haitians (the connection is now made)
  • many gay men would travel to Haiti for cheap sex, then returning to the United States, leading to further infections within the gay community
  • AIDS spread quickly through the closed and impoverished Haiti population
  • bathhouses in the gay community became huge points of infection among the population, government officials debated the impact
  • 1983, AIDS was a political disease even in the face of overwhelming evidence that it didn’t discriminate against host (sexual orientation, race or background)
  • in the summer of 1983, HIV Virus was isolated by the French but scientists in the United States couldn’t wrap their head around more then one retro-virus existing
  • HIV is thought to come from Chimpanzees that carried SIV hunted by humans in Central Africa sometime in the 1930s
  • 1959 was the first confirmed case of somebody dying of AIDS
  • one infection from a Chimpanzee to one Human lead to the current AIDS epidemic
  • in May of 1984, the first AIDS blood test was developed and work on a vaccine is promised within two years
  • AIDS blood test reveals that somebody can be HIV positive but completely healthy for decades before symptoms become apparent, leading to exponential infection rates
  • in 1985, the gay community was going through an incredible challenge as people where dying daily, half of hemophiliacs died from AIDS as well
  • during the second term of Reagan’s administration, AIDS was still not acknowledged and still seen as a mainly a gay problem
  • Rock Hudson was a gifted Hollywood actor, known for his looks and ability with the woman, the personification of a perfect male, was the first major figure diagnosed with AIDS
  • Rock Hudson’s death lead to AIDS becoming mainstream with widespread public fear, discrimination and paranoia spread across the country
  • Ryan White, a 14 year old hemophiliac infected with AIDS is forced to quit coming to school due to unfounded fears and ignorance
  • in September 1985, the Reagan’s administration re-enforces stigma that AIDS can be spread by casual contact, which is then denied by the scientific community which says AIDS is spread by exchanges in bodily fluids
  • AIDS hides itself behind the bodies own sugars that essentially make it invisible to the human immune system
  • in 1985, two million people where infected (mostly in Africa) and over 500 thousand Americans
  • sex and homosexuality are taboo subjects in Africa which lead to exponential infection rates
  • Jonathan Mann encountered AIDS in Zaire in 1984 during a study for the CDC and lead a WHO global program across the world, breaking taboos and forcing the issues behind AIDS into the public
  • Irine Kaliba lead the development of the first AIDS support organization in Uganda after her husband died from AIDS caused by a blood transfusion, promoting education and hope to stop the AIDS infection growth rates (leading to a decrease)
  • in 1985, heroin and the sex industry caused an explosion in new AIDS cases within Thailand
  • 1 in 10 new army recruits where found in Thailand to be infected with AIDS, the government acted quickly to promote the use of condoms among sex workers while neglecting the drug users who had infections rates of up to 40%
  • in Britain, AIDS was primarily spreading through the Heroin community from 0% to 56% within an 18 month period, in response, the government sets-up needle exchanges across the UK
  • in 1987, United States Senator Jesse Helms was insulted by publications spreading knowledge about AIDS prevention and pushed for a ban against homosexual materials which is still on the books today, this was seen as a blow to the AIDS fight
  • AZT was a cancer drug from the 1950s that caused immune system regeneration in AIDS patients, it was a public funded drug whose patent was given to a private company by the United States government at the price of 10 000$US a year
  • mass demonstrations against the slow process of AIDS drug approval and extremely high drug prices
  • AZT doesn’t totally knock out the AIDS virus, as a result, it adapted and became drug resistant to the once promising drug
  • in 1987, the AIDS memorial quilt is displayed in Washington, over 40 thousand Americans had already died from AIDS
  • on May 31st, 1987, president Reagan finally speaks-out about AIDS, while pushing for education, he also took steps that would be counter-productive such as testing new immigrants and not promoting condom use
  • by 1990, a million Americans are infected with AIDS, equivalent to 1 on every 250 people across the United States population
  • Ryan White Care Act is passed by Washington to begin putting a wedge in the exponential global increase in AIDS infections
  • Jonathan Mann departs the WHO because of personality conflicts, his high profile work lead to conflicts with his boss who was jealous of Jonathan’s success on the AIDS front

Summary: Part 2

  • Africans migrate en mass to South African in search of jobs
  • next to the hostels where the men live are brothels where AIDS is spread through the population
  • when Mandela is released from Jail, 1% of the South African population had been infected with AIDS but the government did very little to combat the growing epidemic over the following four years
  • in 1984, Mandela saw his job being mostly that of reconciliation and led his vice president to take the helm of the AIDS fight
  • during the five years that president Mandela was in office, he rarely discussed AIDS as infections where doubling on a yearly basis within his country
  • Bill Clinton ran for president in 1992 promising to take the lead in the AIDS fight, in stark contrast to Reagan
  • HIV was thought to be dormant for several years before infection but scientists found out that it replicated by the billions on a daily basis starting on the first day of infection, it just took a long time before these actions progressed to compromise the immune system
  • replication of HIV isn’t a perfect process, as such, drug resistance is a given
  • in 1996, the triple cocktail developed by the team working under Dr. David Ho shows incredible promise against the AIDS virus, the cost was 16 thousand dollars a year
  • by 1996, 20 million Africans where infected with HIV with no way of affording the cost of treatment, which lead to an enormous moral question being asked
  • AIDS patients in the United States with health care could afford the drugs but not those without it while in Brazil the triple cocktail is freely available to anybody who needs it, yet it’s banned in South Africa
  • Brazil had 500 thousand infected AIDS patients in the 1990s, the government built the AIDS clinics in poor neighborhoods but it wasn’t until a patient brought the government to court did they provide the triple cocktail to their population
  • AZT can prevent transmission between mother and child
  • President Mbeki continues to see that AIDS is an environmental and social disease, infection rates are now to 20% within the population which was completely preventable
  • infection rates within the black communities skyrocketed while they stabilized in the rest of the American population
  • 40% of new AIDS infections come from IV drug users within the United States
  • AIDS becomes a global pandemic which is met with absolute ignorance many governments around the world who deny its existence
  • 20 million people died by the end of the 1990s by HIV/AIDS infections while most of the international community still looked the other way
  • in the late 1990s, President Mbeki repeats his denials about AIDS, saying it’s caused by poverty, not a virus during the first AIDS conference in Africa
  • the pharmaceutical industry stand behind their intellectual property rights behind the AIDS drugs they had developed at the cost of poor peoples lives
  • George Bush creates a 15 billion dollar PEPFAR fund to help provide free AIDS drugs to Africans dying of AIDS to sidestep the UN Global Fund pushed by Kofi Annan
  • United States leadership still think that AIDS was a consequence of sinful behavior, as a result, not their problem, hence funds where released with strings attached in 2002
  • Christians see AIDS as an opportunity to spread the word of God to dying patients around the world
  • UN Global Fund against AIDS targeted over 160 countries while the Bush plan concentrated on mostly African countries
  • SARS in China affected the global community to open transparency about health problems
  • disease, for the first time, seen as a situation that can affect economic and national security of a country
  • triple cocktail needs to be taken for life as the infection returns afterwards, HIV never go away from a persons body, you can suppress it but not eradicate it
  • Bush’s AIDS plan relies on prevention, where 20% of funds are allocated and shies away from direct sexual talk such as condom use
  • prostitution, homosexuality and condom distribution are no-nos regarding receiving funds from the Bush administration
  • the challenges posed by AIDS are far and wide with the implications of an entire global community relying on a constant supply these life saving drugs
  • triple cocktail users live up to 8 years longer on the drugs but the costs take up a large portion of government health care budgets
  • in 2008, both the UN and US funds against AIDS run out
  • 95% of new infections take place in poor countries with 40 million in new infections over the next several years
  • drugs and treatment programs cannot keep-up with infection rates
  • India already has 5 million infections
  • HIV spreads among mostly heterosexual populations now
  • 5 million new cases per year, no cure and no vaccine exists
  • current generation don’t know the face or challenges with AIDS, they tend to think it’s a manageable disease with little consequences, which is false
  • AIDS fight is now towards mitigation, not beating it as too many have died and are being infected daily
  • Nelson Mandela’s son has died from AIDS
  • AIDS shows how interconnected we really are

The Bottom Line

HIV/AIDS is a condition that will be with us for at least the next generation if not more but prevention is always a more effective mechanism to control the spread then treatment.

1st Trimester of LifeAlthough this documentary was done in the early 1980s, the same issues are alive and well today. From forced abortions in China to fit the “one child policy” to mothers who aren’t ready for the burden of motherhood. Abortion isn’t an easy topic to tackle but this documentary does a fantastic job of outlining the situations real women face on a daily basis around the world.

Summary

  • old seminary transformed into an abortion clinic
  • pregnancy termination is a very complex issue and a very difficult situation for many woman to deal with even once they have entered the clinics wall
  • Christian group try to trick woman away from their choice to have an abortion
  • abortionist has no problem with this title but does have problem with being defined only as an abortionist when the doctor provides far more services to the woman then simply pregnancy termination services
  • clinic offers counseling for each of the patients before and after the procedure
  • Christians essentially equate a first term child with a fully developed human being but in a smaller form factor
  • many of the woman seeking abortions do so because of financial and societal pressures that would adversely affect their life in a negative way
  • woman seeking abortions seem to come from dysfunctional families on the lower side of the economical and educational ladder (at least in this documentary)
  • abortion occurs in a very clinical setting by people who are professionals at dealing with the various issues associated with the procedure
  • entire abortion takes only a few minutes to perform from start to finish and seems like a relatively painless procedure when compared to childbirth
  • emotional impact doesn’t seem to hit the patient until after the procedure is completed
  • first trimester material is mostly placental, not a fully formed small human being that Christians anti-abortionists claim
  • abortionist admits that second term abortions can take their toll emotionally, hence, first term abortions are preferred (sooner is always better)
  • anti-abortionists try to associate an emotional connection with their unborn child, giving it human traits such as ability to suck their thumb, heartbeat, brainwaves, bowel movements etc.
  • interesting anti-abortionist quote: “it’s not whether to have a baby or not, the baby is already there, the question is what to do with the baby”
  • anti-abortionists focus on the graphic nature of having an abortion performed instead of the emotional, lifelong toll of woman having children they cannot take care of
  • dedication of both anti-abortionists and doctors performing abortions for their causes is admirable
  • clinical counseling asks very tough questions to the soon to be potential patient and lets them know that alternatives are available
  • anti-abortionists paint a rosy picture of what happens if they keep the baby no matter how bad their situation in life really is

Interesting Observations

I am sure that having an abortion is a very difficult decision for any woman to face no matter their socio-economical background but in this documentary, I am surprised at how down and out the woman really are. Their decisions are not based on the love for their child but on the burden it may have on them and their family. Another interesting observation is how the boyfriend during the two abortions performed on camera are nowhere to be seen and aren’t the most upstanding citizens to begin with. On a final note, if you take away the religious philosophies behind the anti-abortionists beliefs, their arguments have absolutely no legs to stand on.

The Bottom Line

Abortion should be a freely available option for any woman who thinks, justifiably or not, that she isn’t really for motherhood.

Insane in the membrane?Second medical opinions should be standard for serious conditions or when a doctor tells you that you suffer from a disease which you disagree with. Here is what can happen if you don’t.

Story

A doctor labeled his patient to be insane instead of diagnosing him as a multiple sclerosis sufferer. Although his family disagreed with the diagnosis, they went along with it for close to 17 years! As his condition progressed, his deterioration was simply labeled as mental decline and it wasn’t until a few years ago that the patient visited a local hospital neurologist that this was discovered. They are now seeking compensation for this medical error.

The Bottom Line

Medical professionals are as prone to human error as the rest of us but the consequences can be far more severe.

Colas are as healthy as battery acidMuch like alcohol, the substances in cola acts as fantastic leaching agents throughout the body. Cola such as Pepsi and Coke, should only be given to the drain.

Study finds the link

A study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found a link between women who consume colas and the risk of acquiring brittle bone disease (Osteoporosis). The study was conducted on 2500 men and women who where just under 60 years of age. Essentially, the more cola consumed, the lower the mineral bone density found in the test subjects. An important note is that this occurred regardless of the amount of calcium (vitamin D) intake, alcohol, age, cigarette or alcohol consumption. Oddly enough, it isn’t the carbonation that seems to have caused a decrease in mineral bone density as other types of soda pop didn’t produce a decrease in density.

What is Cola anyhow?

Colas are a product category invented by Coke, hence why you see Coca-Cola on many of their products. They where once promoted as a “health supplement” leading to optimal health and wellbeing… I hope this rings a very loud bell in your head regarding “health and wellbeing” products being sold today. The base ingredients in most types of cola are citrus, lime, orange, lemon, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg along with a host of sweeteners. The name originally comes from the kola nuts that where once used as a base component but has since fallen out of favor.

What does Cola do to your body?

There is nothing healthy about the ingredients used to produce a cola beverage, put a steel nail in a glass of coke for 24 hours and this will give you an idea of what occurs inside of you when you drink these products. They are extremely acidic, hence, your body must use minerals from throughout your body to neutralize the acidity level for further processing.

The Bottom Line

Colas, like alcohol, can be easily replaced with other liquids such as water, juices and teas.

Cool... I want one!No matter how you cut it, being sick isn’t any fun and nothing to look forward to nor to brag about. If you happen to have a serious medical condition requiring you to carry around with you a medical device such as a wheelchair or asthma inhaler then we begin going down a slippery slope.

Treatments are not always followed

One of the toughest parts of being in the medical field isn’t the diagnosis, it’s the treatment. From parents that don’t run through an entire course of antibiotics to cure little Billys ear infection to the seventy year old grandmother who rations off medication to have enough to eat. Most medicines that you must ingest taste horrible, injections are never fun and for those with severe problems, daily regimens are rarely something to look forward too. Essentially, people find ways out of doing what is prescribed consciously or subconsciously to their detriment.

Why make medical devices cool?

Some medical devices such as wheelchairs have come a HUGE way, sure, the crappy ancient ones still predominate but at least there are alternatives sprouting. If I lost my legs, I would want a decked out, chromed and sleek looking wheelchair, it would make me feel better instead of the drab chair with wheels you see in the institutions. Another area of growth is with medical containment. If you suffer from asthma, you can now buy cool looking asthma inhaler cases and I am sure the light bulb has lit across the medical devices field as to the opportunities for additional revenues that charging a few dollars more for “cool” can bring in.

Problems associated with Cool medical gear

I already have a problem with the pharmaceutical company taking the helm to educate the public about health conditions that promote their brand name products (when far cheaper and just as effective generics are available). The results speak for themselves. It’s no mistake that the United States consumes more medication (necessary or otherwise) from controlling kids in school to treating depression in adults and the general acceptance of a drug culture (alcohol to tobacco). The government has clearly given control of public health issues.

I do see a class system developing between the “haves” and “have nots” within the patient community for a host of conditions. The cool kids will have all their latest Harry Potter Canes and hovering wheelchairs while the others will be stuck with rusty institutional chairs and a dowel. Don’t believe me? Simply compare the top of the line medical institutions in the USA vs the third world, this is what is already happening in the industrialized world.

It isn’t all bad

Now the flip side, if having a Harry Potter Cane makes little Billy more energetic to follow a course of therapy, then the extra cost is marginal compared to the emotional gain. If the mass marketing of medical devices becomes fashionable, then all the old, drab stuff will quickly make its way to the third world, filling up hospitals with essential equipment that will make a tremendous difference. Who knows, the extra profits earned by medical device manufacturers may even end up in R&D budgets, further improving treatment options for patients around the world.

The Bottom Line

Medicine and medical devices are necessities for those requiring them, not fashion statements for those who don’t.

Super-Morbid-Obesity is a both a Choice and a Drain! There is a growing trend in the medical field, as people get more and more obese, the products need to properly take care of them need to grow larger and stronger to handle the extra bulk.

Case Study: Calgary

Calgary has just received an ambulance that can carry people who weight up to a thousand pounds! Yes, a thousand pounds! The new ambulance features a remote lifting system, air mattress that blows up under the patient and wider work rooms in the back.

We got it backwards!

Paramedics are increasingly having problems getting some patients to medical rooms because they simply cannot handle the bulk of some people who choose through daily actions to let themselves go. These super-morbidly-obese people then have the gull to call 911 and request medical services. I simply do not get it, I don’t know of any medical condition that is able to get somebody up to these atrocious weights while eating a normal diet and exercise regimen. Being super-morbidly-obese is a choice and I don’t really care as to the cause. These people have problems, big ones (no pun intended) and by serving them, we are only making things worse for the medical industry, the staff and ultimately, the health conscious patient themselves. A paramedic is a very precious commodity, if they throw out their back carrying somebody who obviously doesn’t care about themselves, this is going to put able-bodied people who do care for themselves at risk. I think we need to step back a little in the medical field and revise certain oaths taken by people in the medical field to essentially say:

Take care of yourself, we will help take care of you.
Neglect yourself, we will help dig a hole.

Live with your choices

If you choose to live a life of unhealthy habits, you are responsible for your own health care. 911 will come pick-up your body should you have a heart attack at 700lbs but don’t expect them to use a moving crane to get you into the Operating Theater in order to save the life you have chosen to throw away. If you choose to smoke your entire life and end up with lung cancer, then you have to drag your own butt into the Hospital, purchase your own unsubsidized Oxygen and drag your butt back home… you want a lung transplant? I don’t think so, healthy people have first priority. I believe health is the ultimate personal responsibility. Getting hit by a bus while your healthy which causes medical conditions is one thing, choosing to neglect your body which causes medical conditions is quite another.

The Bottom Line

Health is a choice more often that not, it cannot be ignored.

ADD / ADHDModifying kids behavior in order for them to fit inside of a “one size fits all” mold is never a good idea but sometimes, this is all that can be done because of lack of resources (financial, chronological and emotional).

Background

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and begins in childhood in which the child is difficult to control due to lack of attention, hyperactivity and other behavioral problems. ADD is simply the condition without the hyperactive aspect being expressed by the child. It is mostly treated with medication and neither the cause nor ways of preventing it are known.

Summary

I encourage you to view this video but here is a summary in the meantime:

  • children failing preschool, being told they suffer from brain disorders and need psychiatric medications to control behavior in schools
  • each class within a school in the United States have 2-3 kids consuming behavior modification drugs and this is only increasing
  • 4x more psyciatric medication prescribed to Americans kids then what is prescribed around the world combined
  • Family A
    • their child was misbehaving, impulsive, unfocused and to his teacher, he needed medication to “fit in”
    • 6 million school kids diagnosed with ADHD / ADD in the United States
    • diagnosis based on list of 28 multiple choice questions, child, which is three and a half, was diagnosed with ADHD by psychiatrist and being told he needed medication to calm him down
  • Family B
    • child takes 3 tables in the morning, some more during lunch then later in the day to help child concentrate
    • parents told child needed medication based on teachers assessment, such as talking with others and being social during classes
    • Retalin is being sold as the safest medication to help a child get over ADHD
    • child approached parents to get on the medication to help develop focus in school
    • child went from failing to great achievement in school, helped athletic performance and had a dramatic difference in personality traits
    • in 7th grade, child had doubts as to effectiveness of taking Retalin and decided to stop medication against wishes of school, psychiatrist and family
    • teachers noticed changes in childs behavior during 7th grade even when they didn’t know she was diagnosed with ADD
    • after a month off Retalin, child returned onto drugs, making teacher happy that the student can once again focus
    • half way through 7th grade, Retalin was replaced with Adderall
  • medication prescribed so child is within a normal range of behavior
  • in the 50s and 60s there wasn’t a need to have 6 million children medicated for ADD / ADHD, so what changed?
  • ADD / ADHD is considered a fraud by Scientologists and they pushed school boards to stop pushing for medication of their student population
  • ADHD is a lifelong condition, neurological and inherited which can only be “cured” via medication
  • ADHD drugs cannot be advertised directly to patients so “public talks” about ADHD used to open “awareness” about the problem and the drugs that can sure it
  • ADD / ADHD is a billion dollar a year industry, diagnosis is a booming industry
  • Shire Richwood, drug maker of ADHD drugs, advocates under the association CHADD
  • CHADD pushed for children to be eligible under disability act, so they can have less homework, extra services and classes for their child paid by school
  • in the 1980s ADD / ADHD incidences where stable but diagnosis boomed in the 1990s after the United States made this condition eligible under the disability act as parents found out about the advantages of such a program
  • lawsuits flying all over the place that there is a conspiracy between Novaris (Retalin manufacturer), Shire Richwood (Adderall manufacturer) and CHADD to over-prescribe ADD / ADHD drugs to children to help their bottom line
  • Family C
    • diagnosis of ADD / ADHD is complex as it co-exists with other psychological problems such as depression, self-esteem and other factors
    • child is very sensitive and depressed
    • child had problems hanging out with the wrong crowd, suffered from peers making fun of him due to weight and other insults
    • child became overly concerned about future (in negative way)
    • child brought to church where a therapist thought he suffered from suicidal tendencies
    • child attempted suicide after being put on medication for several months, was tired of his life no matter how much medication was prescribed
  • ADHD linked with depression in 18% of cases, additional drugs prescribed which also helped him loose some weight (child is morbidly obese)
  • scientists have a tough time finding out more about ADD / ADHD as to cause after close to 20 years of study
  • stimulants (Retalin, Adderrall etc. ) are effective against ADD / ADHD, it’s seen as a disorder of efficiency which may be due to size of cerebellum (being smaller in ADD / ADHD vs normal child)
  • CCHR, association funded by Scientologists, doesn’t recognize psychiatric industry, says medication for psychological conditions is nothing but witchcraft
  • Family D
  • child diagnosed with ADHD in grade two, put on Retalin and by the time child was in 6th grade, was on a host of drugs to control behavior but no drugs seemed to work
  • parents got court order to put child on Adderrall against his wishes, his condition lead to breakup of family

My personal views about ADD / ADHD debate

I believe that ADD / ADHD in 95% of the cases is based on environment and diet, there is nothing wrong with a child who is inattentive nor hyperactive, we are all different.

Most people have an atrocious diet, this does nothing to help both mental and physical development. The main reason that medication is being pushed is to help teachers better perform their jobs, these children are simply BORED with where they are and methods being used to teach them. Kids (and adults) of course have no problem focusing on things they LOVE to do. I was bored in University and most of high school, I had a few exceptions when the teacher that taught had a real passion for their courses, others simply treated us like robots to memorize and spit out results. Of course, it’s always easier to simply prescribe medication for all involved (including parents) then to make a drastic change in environment. Maybe your kid isn’t meant to learn via school, throw them on a boat and travel around the world, I believe the symptoms you see would quickly disappear.

I also believe a steady diet of television in the formative years aggravates the condition. Think about it, your brain adapts to the environment around it, if you are watching television, your brain is being taught that something new and exciting is always but a few seconds away… that’s why it’s entertaining. Go from this to a static class room for up to 8 hours a day and no wonder the brain over-reacts (hyperactivity or depression). Think about it.

Of course, there is that 5% of cases where medication may be required, but treating children with drugs while the brain is still developing should be avoided at all costs. To summarize, I believe ADHD / ADD is very similar to cancer, in which environment and lifestyle choices play an enormous role in its development.

The Bottom Line

Real or not, ADHD is here to stay because the alternatives to medications are simply too much of a perceived burden.

Mannatechs Super Holy Water to the Rescue!Looks like Mannatech is at it again, this time, revolutionizing water!

Background

I reviewed the company Mannatech a few weeks ago for their successful attempts at circumventing laws, selling nothing but useless overpriced sugar pills and telling those taking them it will cure their cancer, aids and a host of other outrageous claims.  (Mannatech: Overpriced Sugar Pills)

Well, I guess they are on fire now, apparently, they have discovered something new, truly revolutionizing… water! I have to give them credit though, they admit they are selling nothing but sugar pills, now they are selling water, at least they got some honesty (however perverse).

Enhanced Water Technology

You got to be kidding, people actually believe this bull shit? Water, is made by two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, forming H2O. If it was H3O or HO3 then it isn’t water, it’s something else! Their new line of revolutionizing skin care product, dubbed “Optimal Skin Care System” is free of preservatives, fragrances and colorants… their marketing worked overtime on this one folks because the secret behind being able to do this is Enhanced Water Technology! WOW….

Tensa Water

I though this was a joke but apparently Mannatechs incredible water technology uses proprietary filtration and enhancement systems that creates a new form of water called Tensa Water. What is Tensa Water? Well, it’s like glyconutrients, a catch phrase that only exists in marketing departments as opposed to scientific ones. Tensa means Heavenly. So, to put this another way, Mannatechs Water Technology, the thing they spent so much R&D developing via prayer produces Heavenly Water.

Clinical Studies?

Mannatech is as synonymous to a clinical study as a boat is to an orange tree. They did a study that showed by using this incredible heavenly water called Tensa that people had increased skin moisture, smoothness and hydration… no shit… they are putting water on it! They even point to the fact that this study found out that radiance (incredibly subjective word that is scientifically useless) grew by 75% and skin moisture improved by 100%! Mannatech has to be laughing all the way to the bank on this one.

Ultra Pure Water

Well, apparently Tensa is a revolution and they have also invented Ultra Pure Water as well, with a mix of other naturally sourced ingredients such as trehalose, iris florentina root extract with isoflavone, yeast extract, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and artemia extract.

What’s Next?

Well, I am convinced that in a few months Mannatech will be selling dirt, after water and sugar, this has to be the next logical step… no? 75% of the Earth is covered by water, they got that market covered so the next 25% must come from the land itself as they have also cornered the vegetation growing on land. I think they may even be crazy enough to sell Holy Air which you add via compressed canister to all your meals to help triple it’s nutritional content. I can see the headline now “Mannatech Revolutionizes Air and Dirt with proprietary technology that infuses the Holy Spirit in every atom, leading to a total rejuvenation of mind and spirit”.

The Bottom Line

At least people buying overpriced water to put on their skin isn’t going to cause death or serious injury, unlike their sugar pill that some people take instead of sound medical knowledge. This company is a joke, ripping people off all while laughing all the way to the bank.

Chris Benoit the CowardI have heard of this several times in the media now, former star turned murderer and coward, Chris Benoit was found in a home with his dead 7 year old child and wife. The medias take… STEROIDS DID IT!

He had problems

Although this is a developing story, based on what I read, it seems this guy had problems for a long time. In 2003 his wife filed for divorce, placed a restraining order against him and to say his job is violent is an understatement. So why the focus on steroids?

Steroids did it!

I am getting tired of the media characterizing steroids as causing “roid rage” which can, within an instant, cause a totally normal person to go on a violent killing spree. It doesn’t work that way! Politicians, in their absolute ignorance will jump on this to put even further resources to stop the steroid epidemic from killing other innocent victims. When ever there is a suicide, murder or violence with steroids at the scene, the media instantly link that as the cause and that’s the end of the story. Pushing the myth that this is an extremely dangerous drug when the opposite is true.

What is steroids, what it does and doesn’t do

Steroids is used not only by bodybuilders, it’s used for wasting diseases to help keep a person from totally wasting away (ei: AIDS, Cancer etc. ) but the media seems to think that only bodybuilders use this to build up their incredible physique. From my talks with various steroid users, this “roid rage” is simply a boost of energy when working out. Those who describe this as violent tendencies had them before, no different then an alcoholic blaming a rampage on a bottle of Vodka. Steroids is simply a scape goat used by people to lay blame on something else for their actions and decisions.

Steroids vs Alcohol vs Cocaine

Oddly enough, the FDA is so concerned about the social impact that steroids can have on society that in the United States, it’s classified along the same hard drugs as Cocaine and even Heroin. Put another way, they don’t mid alcohol being advertised and sold to drunk drivers, they don’t mind tobacco being sold which causes cancer but those damn steroids have got to go! Many countries, wrongly, have also banned the use of recreational steroids. Steroids does screw up your hormonal balance and cause grown men to cry like a school girl when they go off, but the impact of a drunk is far worse on society in my opinion. If followed by a doctor, I think steroids are perfectly safe, many men are on hormone replacement therapy and they aren’t out there killing people!

The Bottom Line

Chris is a looser, plain and simple, I can only hope they place blame on HIM and not steroids.

Incredible Results from a Flawed ExperimentUnless you have been reading about hardcore fitness and nutrition for an extensive period of time, you probably never heard about The Colorado Experiment, it sometimes makes its way in various bodybuilding forums but only anecdotally.

What is the Colorado Experiment?

The Colorado Experiment was performed in 1973 at Colorado State University on two subjects for 28 and 22 days. The reason for this experiment was to contest many of the pillars being preached at the time about how to gain optimal muscle growth. At the time, spending hours in the gym doing an astronomical amount of heavy lifting on almost a daily basis was thought to be the best way to train your body for pure mass along with a heavy dose of steroids. What the authors of the study wanted to prove was that short (about 30 minutes), high intensity exercises using a full range of motion without the use of drugs could provide better results.

Problems with the study

There are numerous problems with this study that dramatically affected the results, one is both the number and quality of the subjects. One was a former Mr. America (pro bodybuilder Casey Viator whose before/after is shown in this blogs photograph) who had a string of bad lucks and lost a lot of weight due to an accident. The other subject, Arthur Jones had extensive training experience under his belt as well. These where not an average representations. Put another way, both subjects where relatively underweight and their bodies where aching for some activity after a period of inactivity. The study also didn’t last long enough, 22 and 28 days is too short a period of time, I have also read elsewhere that these subjects where pretty much given unlimited nutritional resources as well (protein, food etc. ), anabolic drugs where well known by both subjects and compensation was based on the amount gained. Having a few weeks to prepare, they most likely dieted themselves down from their previous state of inactivity to make the gains that much more incredible. Yes, they are incredible.

The Study Results

Well, as you can guess, the “natural” results where incredible. Casey managed to incredibly increase his bodyweight by 45 pounds of which his body lost 18 pounds of fat and lean muscle mass went up by 63 pounds… in 28 days! Arthur averaged a bodyweight increase of a little less then 14 pounds haven lost about 2 pounds of body fat but net gain of 15 pounds of muscle. The authors took this as meaning that their training method was a spectacular success, although they also admit these people have above average genetics and experience.

Real World Interpretation

To put these results in perspective, on average, a bodybuilder is lucky if he gains about 30 pounds of bodyweight during a 90 day anabolic steroid cycle, more if they throw in growth hormone on their first cycle. Each cycle done afterwards leads towards diminishing returns so drug amounts need to be exponentially increased. The resultant anabolic gains slowly go away over time when the body returns to its normal testosterone level unless anabolic maintenance levels (bridging) are done. This is with very strict diet and training, of that, there may be a lot of fat loss and lean muscle gain but on average, this is do-able. Steroids may allow you to temporarily go way above your natural genetic potential but eventually, you will need to take so many drugs simply to maintain this level of build that your body will begin degrading from anabolic stress.

In the above study, taking Casey for instance, he was able to do 1.5x that amount “naturally” in a third the time. What Arthur was able to accomplish is extra-ordinary in its own right as well… a net gain of 15 pounds of muscle over 22 days would give any bodybuilder wet dreams, with or without the use of drugs.

The Bottom Line

This experiment was badly conceived from the very beginning, extensive drug testing and blood work throughout the experiment along with a monitored diet of maybe 20 average subjects using a double blind clinical setting would have given far more insightful results.

(here is the text from the study so you can read it yourself)

The Colorado Experiment

by Arthur Jones

The following is a brief, preliminary report of an experiment conducted at Colorado State University in May of 1973.

Location . . . Department of Physical Education, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado.

Supervision . . . Dr. Elliott Plese, Director of Exercise Physiology Lab., Colorado State University.

Dates … May 1, 1973 through May 29, 1973 for one subject (Casey Viator), an elapsed period of 28 days . . . and May 23, 1973 for the second subject (Arthur Jones), an elapsed period of 22 days.

lean body-mass and fat contents determinations for both subjects were produced by the whole body counter under the supervision of James E. Johnson, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Radiology and Radiation Biology, Colorado State University.

purpose of the experiment . . . it is the author’s contention that the growth of human muscular tissue is related to the intensity of exercise; increases in strength and muscle-mass are rapidly produced by very brief and infrequent training, if the intensity of exercise is high enough.

It is the author’s second contention that increasing the amount of training is neither necessary nor desirable . . . on the contrary, a large amount of high intensity training will actually reduce the production of strength and muscle mass increases.

It is the author’s third contention that “negative work” (eccentric contraction) is one of the most important factors involved in exercise performed for the purpose of increasing strength and muscle-mass.

It is the author’s fourth contention that nothing in the way of a special diet is required . . . so long as a reasonably well-balanced diet is provided.

It is the author’s fifth contention that the use of the so-called “growth drugs” (steroids) is neither necessary nor desirable … on the contrary, repeated tests with animals and double-blind tests with human subjects have clearly demonstrated that the use of such drugs is strongly contraindicated.

It is the author’s sixth contention that maximum-possible increases in strength and muscle-mass can be produced only by the use of full range, rotary form, automatically variable, direct resistance.

full-range resistance is provided only when the involved body-part is moved through a full range of possible movement against constant resistance . . . from a starting position of full muscular extension (a “pre-stretched” position) to a finishing position of full muscular contraction.

rotary-form resistance is an absolute requirement for full-range exercise … since muscular contraction produces a rotary-form movement of the related body-part, it is necessary for the resistance and the body-part to rotate on a common axis.

automatically variable resistance is an absolute requirement for high-intensity exercise . . . since movement produces changes in usable strength, it is necessary for the resistance to vary in proportion to the resulting changes in strength.

direct resistance is also required in order to avoid the limitations imposed by the involvement of smaller, weaker, muscular structures. The resistance must be “directly” imposed against the body-part moved by the muscles being exercised.

Conventional forms of exercise provide none of these requirements; the results being that . . . muscles are not worked throughout a full range of possible movement . . . resistance is limited to an amount that can be moved in the weakest position . . . little or nothing is done in the way of improving flexibility, since there is no resistance in the fully extended position . . . and no resistance is provided in the fully contracted position.

Only Nautilus equipment was used in the Colorado Experiment; equipment designed to provide all of the requirements for full range, rotary form, automatically variable, direct resistance.

RESULTS . .

First subject (Casey Viator), 28 days

Increase in bodyweight……..45.28 pounds

Loss of bodyfat…………..17.93 pounds

Muscular gain……………..63.21 pounds

Second subject (Arthur Jones),22 days

Increase in bodyweight …….13.62 pounds

Loss of bodyfat……………1.82 pounds

Muscular gain……………..15.44 pounds

It should be clearly understood that neither of the subjects was an “average” subject, and there is no implication that subjects of average or below average potential will all produce equal results from a similar program of exercises.

Casey Viator has trained on a fairly regular basis for a period of several years; with barbells and other conventional training equipment until June of 1970, at which point he placed third in the Mr. America contest . . . and with both barbells and Nautilus equipment until June of 1971, when he won the Mr. America contest.

From September of 1971 until September of 1972, he trained primarily with Nautilus equipment . . . with limited use of a barbell, primarily the performance of barbell squats.

From September of 1972 until December 23, 1972, he trained exclusively with Nautilus equipment . . . limiting his exercises to “negative only” movements. At the end of that period of training he weighed 200.5 pounds.

In early January of 1973, he was involved in a serious accident at work and lost most of one finger as a result . . . and almost died from an allergic reaction to an anti-tetanus injection.

For approximately four months, most of January through April of 1973, he did not train at all; and since his level of activity was low, his diet was reduced accordingly. During that period of four months, he lost approximately 33.63 pounds . . . but 18.75 pounds were lost as a direct result of the accident and the near-fatal injection. So his loss from nearly four months out of training was only 14.88 pounds … less than a pound a week.

The second subject (the author, Arthur Jones) has trained on a very irregular basis for a period of thirty-four years … and reached a muscular bodyweight of 205 pounds at one time, nineteen years ago.

The author did no training of any kind for a period of approximately four years until late November of 1972 … and then trained on a fairly regular basis in the “negative only” fashion for a period of approximately six weeks. Training was ceased entirely in early January of 1973 … and no training was done again until the start of the Colorado Experiment.

The author’s bodyweight has varied from approximately 145 to 160 over the last ten years . . . briefly reaching a level of 190 at the end of approximately six months of steady training that was concluded four years prior to the start of the Colorado Experiment.

So both of the subjects have demonstrated the potential for greater than average muscular mass and both subjects were rebuilding previously existing levels of muscular size.

A certain percentage of a group of random subjects would undoubtedly produce equal results, a very low percentage might produce better results; a few subjects would produce little or nothing in the way of results but average results would probably be less than those produced by the two subjects in this experiment. The primary determining letters being (1) individual potential for muscular size, (2) age, (3) general health, and (4) the intensity devoted to the training.

Actually high-intensity training is not easy . . . the training sessions are brief, indeed must be brief, but there is an apparently natural inclination on the part of most subjects to hold back.” Most exercises are terminated at a point well below an actual point of muscular failure, then, in an effort to compensate for the reduction intensity, the usual practice is to add more exercise to the program.

However, in fact, no amount of additional exercise will compensate for a reduction in the intensity of exercise … and if carried to extremes, which such training frequently is, the subject may actually prevent growth by exceeding the recovery ability of the system.

As stated previously, it is the author’s contention that very rapid and large scale increases will be produced in strength and muscular mass by a brief program of high-intensity exercise; and it was the purpose of this experiment to demonstrate that such results can be produced in practice as well as in theory.

At the moment. in athletic training circles, it is well accepted that supplemental strength training can be of very great value to athletes involved in any sport. But in practice, a seemingly natural inclination to equate “more” with “better” is actually preventing athletes from producing the results that could be produced.

Many coaches avoid supplemental strength training because they “don’t have time” . . . but in fact, very little time is required; if the exercises used are high-intensity exercises properly performed. Nor is it the author’s contention that using the proper equipment is the entire answer in itself. . .on the contrary, good results can be produced with a barbell or with conventional training such as the Universal Machine, or with any equipment that does both negative and positive work. The demonstrated superiority of Nautilus equipment will be largely wasted if the equipment is improperly used . . . Nautilus equipment is designed to provide a level of intensity that is impossible in any other fashion, but it must be used properly in order to produce maximumpossible results.

Proper training will produce rapid but very steady increases in both strength and muscular mass . . . and this was demonstrated very clearly by the results of the Colorado Experiment.

For example, during the first l4 days, Viator gained 28.93 pounds, a daily average of 2.06 pounds. During the next 3 days, he gained 3.92 pounds, a daily average of 1.3 pounds. During the following 5 days, he gained 6.09 pounds, a daily average of 1.2 pounds. And during the final 6 days, he gained 6.34 Pounds, a daily average of 1.05 pounds.

So it is clear that his “rate of gaining was slowing down at the end of the experiment . . . but it is equally clear that his actual growth was very steady.

In the author’s case, the pattern was much the same. During the first 7 days, 4.08 pounds were gained, a daily average of .58 pounds. During the next 7 days, 4.95 pounds were gained, a daily average of .7 pounds. And during the final 8 days, 4.6 pounds were gained, a daily average of .57 pounds.

There were no “sudden spurts” of growth in either case…so we obviously were not putting back weight lost from dehydration; instead growth was very steady throughout the periods of training.

During a period of 22 days, the author trained a total of 12 times. Three workouts in a row during the first three days in order to quickly get over any resulting muscular soreness, then workouts spaced approximately 48 hours apart.

Total “training time” (in and out of the gym) was exactly 298 minutes…4 hours and 58 minutes, an average of 24.8 minutes per workout.

122 “sets” were performed during the 12 workouts . . . an average of just over 10 sets per workout.

Out of the total of 122 sets, 54 were performed in a “negative only” fashion . . . 14 were performed in a “negative accentuated” fashion . . . and 54 were performed in a normal (negative-positive) style.

Negative only means that the resistance was “lowered” only, involving eccentric contraction.

negative accentuated means that the resistance was raised with both arms (or both legs), and then lowered with only one arm or leg.

Normal means that the resistance was raised with both arms (or legs) and lowered in the same fashion.

Only one “set” of each exercise was performed in almost all workouts, and when two sets of an exercise were performed they were never performed in sequence.

When two sets of any particular exercise were performed, they were done at different points in a workout . . . and were done for different reasons. For example: a type of “dipping” exercise was sometimes performed for two different purposes . . . this exercise would be used immediately following a direct triceps exercise in order to involve the chest muscles for the purpose of working the already pre-exhausted triceps muscles to an even higher level of intensity … then, at another point in the workout, an almost exactly opposite purpose was served when the same exercise was used in order to provide an even higher intensity of work for the previously pre-exhausted chest muscles.

While the above paragraph may be rather confusing at first glance, this style of training is actually quite simple, as the following example will show.

When worked to a point of momentary failure against direct and isolated resistance imposed only against the triceps, the triceps can be forced to continue to a point of even greater intensity if a second exercise is performed immediately after the first exercise.

But the second exercise must bring into use other muscular structures that make it possible for the triceps to continue.

So we first worked the triceps in a direct exercise, to a point of failure … and then immediately performed a second exercise, a “dipping” type of movement with variable resistance, The second exercise (the dipping movements) also involved the chest muscles . . . which permitted the triceps to be worked far beyond a normal point of failure.

Thus, in that case, the dipping exercise was performed for the purpose of totally exhausting the triceps.

But at another point in the workout, the same dipping exercise was used to totally exhaust the chest muscles. In this case, the chest was worked first … to a point of failure, then the dipping exercise was performed immediately afterwards, bringing the strength of the triceps into use in order to permit the chest muscles to be worked beyond a normal point of failure.

However, in general, we performed only one set of each exercise during each workout, the author’s gains from this very brief program were as follow . . . an average of 1.28 pounds per workout … an average of .126 pounds per set … an average of 3.06 pounds per hour of training.

The other, much younger, subject’s gains were much greater. During a period of 28 days, as a result of 14 workouts involving a total training-time of 7 hours, 50 minutes, an average of 33.6 minutes per workout, his gains were as follow . . . an average muscle mass increase of 4.51 pounds per workout . . . or .36 pounds per set . . .an average gain of 8.04 pounds from each hour of training.

But what about strength gains?

Prior to the start of the experiment (approximately an hour before the first workout), initial strength tests to a point of failure were performed on a Universal Machine. And at the end of the experiment (three days after the last workout), a final strength test was again performed on a Universal Machine.

During the first test, Viator performed 32 repetitions in the leg-press with 400 pounds . . . 28 days later, having done nothing even close to a leg-press in the meantime, he performed 45 repetitions with 840 pounds. And was forced to quit at that point because of pain, rather than muscular failure.

So his leg-strength more than doubled in the leg-press . . . even though he did not perform that exercise during the experiment. His other strength increases were of a very high order . . . clearly proving that his increased muscular mass was functional.

Flexibility? Near the end of the experiment, at a bodyweight well over 200 pounds, this subject clearly demonstrated a range of movement far in excess of that possible by any member of the Colorado State University wrestling team. In fact, his demonstrated range of movement is so far in excess of “average” range of movement that it literally must be seen to be appreciated . . . clearly proving that great muscular size does not have to limit flexibility, if it is produced by exercises that provide full-range movement.

The “pace” of the workouts was very fast . . . but not continuous throughout the workouts, some brief rest-periods were involved between some exercises. And these rest-periods are included in the listed times of the workouts. Times were measured from the start of the workouts to the end of the workouts.

All exercises were carried to a point of momentary failure . . . except in the cases of “negative only” exercises, which were terminated when it was no longer possible to control the downwards movement of the resistance.

In general, approximately ten repetitions were performed in each set; but in all cases, the maximum possible number of repetitions were performed . . . stopping only when it was impossible to perform another repetition in good form.

The “form” or style of performance was as strict as possible, the resistance was moved in a smooth fashion, and was briefly stopped in the position of full muscular contraction. Jerking and sudden movements were totally avoided.

Several members of the Denver Broncos Professional Football Team visited the lab for the purpose of observing the workouts, and then started training in an identical fashion during the last two weeks of the experiment . . . after the experiment, the Broncos placed an order for several Nautilus machines and drastically reduced their previous training schedule.

And while we were training in Colorado, members of several other professional football teams were training at our facility in Florida. . . in an identical fashion, three brief weekly workouts involving only one set of approximately a dozen exercises, with as much emphasis on the “negative” part of the work as possible.

Results?

One member of a Canadian professional team became so strong in the pullover exercise that he was using 675 pounds for several repetitions in good form . . . having started two months earlier with 275 pounds.

Lou Ross of the Buffalo Bills added 20 Pounds to his 6 foot, 7 inch frame … cut a full two-tenths from his already fast time in the 40 yard dash … added five and one-half inches to his high jump … and doubled his strength in many areas of movement. These figures having been provided by the Buffalo Bills coaching staff, who tested Lou before and after a two month Nautilus training program in Florida.
