WoodMarvels.com: The Evolution of a Business

As you may or not be aware of, in addition to LegendaryLife.com (phase I is complete btw, working on phase II before launch), I am also the proud owner of a site called WoodMarvels.com. It is a site that sells blueprints, EPS files and even physical, laser cut kits!

The Beginning

When I first began WoodMarvels.com, I wanted to create a site that allowed people access to inexpensive blueprints to make wooden models unlike anything available on the marketplace. I wanted to create some really cool looking pieces of work and allow others to build it for their friends and family. Wood is an amazing material and I wanted to bring what is possible with it to a whole new level.

At first, the site only featured downloadable blueprints but about 5 or 6 months into it, I thought, “hey, not everybody has access to woodcutting tools, I wonder if I could sell kits!” About a week later after some research, I found a site that could do JUST THAT! Fantastic! I can now offer woodcrafters plans and those without a shop or cutting experience, laser cut kits which they can assemble with glue. I started gaining attention within various communities and got some designers to show their work on my site.

A full year later, I began to be approached to sell the models I created in EPS format, I ignored these calls initially… who would want EPS files I thought to myself? If you are not familiar with EPS files, they are a digital format that is used as a path reference for laser cutters and other machinery. If you put a line on an EPS file, the laser cutter will cut along that line. It took some convincing that there was a market for it but as usual, I came back around and decided to offer it on my site, a process that I am almost done doing. My biggest fear was that of control, giving-up your EPS files to the internet means that anybody can reproduce your work as many times as they want without any loss in quality or distinction from products bought from my site. It’s equal to releasing the files that make-up a car to the world and then waking-up the next day and everybody has your car but you never got compensated for this mass-produced copy.

The Middle

Well, just today, I realized at how much WoodMarvels.com has evolved, from an idea to a physical business that is making money for other designers and allowing people around the world access towards making some extra money on the side. How is that? Well, I am selling commercial production licenses of all my models in addition to many of the other designers who have joined with me in offering this. By sharing my expertise, others are able to find joy and challenges in their lives, able to find a different avenue to create additional confidence in themselves and most importantly, spreading the fun of wood as a very viable alternative to plastics for everyday household items, including toys!

The End

WoodMarvels.com is growing rather well, client lists keep expanding and so do the offerings. I am generating sales for designers and new opportunities are arising. We are also going to be written-up in a major magazine in a months time! How will it all end? Who knows, but for now, I am really enjoying the rid up and with a second volume being proofed right now for WoodMarvels.com along with the one I wrote for LegendaryLife.com, still a lot happening!

The Bottom Line

What you start with isn’t always what you end-up with.

Interesting Video: Kirk Cameron vs the evil Athiest industry

I don’t honestly care what people believe as long as it does no harm towards others, they don’t try to brainwash others into believing what they do and mutual respect is observed but I found this video rather interesting… sure, there are many out there like this but so far, this is the clearest.

Although believe only in MYSELF, I rather enjoy watching people with different points of view on a topic and seeing their line of reasoning. The way people convince themselves of things, even to the point of absurdity, reveals just how fragile our minds really are to exterior inputs. I think if we believed more in ourselves before allowing others to mold our conscious and unconscious mind, the better civilization would be.

I saw the debate between Kirk and the evil Athiests a little over a year ago, what amused me was his Photoshop pictures and saying “there is no bullfrog” with a picture half bull, half frog. He’s a funny guy who gets the point across but his push is a little too extreme in my opinion as it isn’t needed.

You either believe or you don’t, end of story. Confusing science (based on facts) and religion (based on beliefs) is never a good thing for either side, regardless of the foundations for your decision.

Are Athiests bad? NO. Are Catholics bad? NO. Are Muslims bad? NO. Are (insert movement) bad? NO. What makes people bad are their actions and the excuse used more often than not lie in their belief structures and the segregation that occurs because of them. Why is there hatred between different movements or groups of people? It’s built into us, we are a tribal people, we enjoy people who share the same customs, rituals and beliefs as us and dislike those that don’t. Sure, there are exceptions, but if you look at history… those who weren’t part of the “in crowd” often get the pointy end of a stick for the benefit of those that are.

Friend gets a heart attack… his advice to you!

A designer whom I worked with on the site WoodMarvels.com (he designed the great looking planes on my site), Jerry, just had a heart attack and here is what he wrote so that this doesn’t happen to you.

In the past I was told “Your cholesterol level should be below 200” and I was running about 203… so I didn’t think it was very bad… sort of like when the speed limit is 55 any you are doing 57… not too bad right? I have kept my levels between 200 and 203 for at least 10 years… getting them checked when I donated blood.

I got my levels today from when I had a heart attack Friday, July 24th, and guess what they were?

They were 203.

But the number is useless… it has no real meaning… you need to look at the three numbers that make it up… http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4500

  • HDL
  • LDL
  • Triglyceride

HDL – You want this number HIGH… who knew? It should be ABOVE 60, less than 40 is a factor for MAJOR heart desease. My readings were 31 HDL… about HALF of what I need to be protected. So I started looking and found this http://www.fatfreekitchen.com/cholesterol/raise-hdl-cholesterol.html

I’ll need to make some dietary changes and start eating more grains… cereal I think would be good. I started eating cereal at night but stopped to loose weight. I’ll have to find a balance. I need more dark green vegetables too. Looks like I’m going to be eating skim milk too.

LDL – You want this number low, Less than 160 is good for someone with no history of issues, for me it should be below 100. My reading was 129 LDL. This is called “Near or above optimal” by the American Heart Association. For this one I need to limit the intake of eggs, red meat, and cheese. Considering my diet has been mostly red meat and cheese… as usual… I screwed this one up too.

Triglycerides – This is the last number in the series… and should also be low. You want a level below 150, if you can get it below 100 even better. My level 214 triglycerides. Right there… that’s the one that nailed me. So I looked it up too… http://www.all-about-lowering-cholesterol.com/diet-to-lower-triglycerides.html

In a nutshell…

“Diets high in carbohydrates, especially sugar, lead to increases in triglycerides.”

A diet to lower triglycerides omits alcohol and sugar – as they stimulate triglyceride production. Therefore, you should:

ELIMINATE or LIMIT ALL sugars such as, concentrated sweets, sugar, honey, molasses, jams, jellies, candies, pies, cakes, cookies, candy, doughnuts, ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sweetened gelatine.

Eliminate or limit as much as you can acohol, such as beer, wine, hard liquor, liqueurs as well as other foods, like sweetened cereals, flavored yogurts, and sports or energy bars.

Cut down on red meat, especially fried, changing it to broiled or roasted poultry (turkey, chicken), preferably free-range. Add more dark green leafy vegetables.

So… this means the Gatorade I’m drinking at lunch… sugar. The chocolate I have at night… sugar… many little things that added up to one big problem. Now it is time for a change.

Breakfast: In the morning eat a bowl of cerial with no sugar, skim milk.
Lunch: Turkey, ham, chicken sandwich with no cheese. Keep using the grain wrap. Add some dark vegitable.
Dinner: Vegetables mostly, fish, chicken, turkey.
Snack: Hey I got one right… the almonds I snack on are good. I can have skim milk too, perhaps some cerial.

Now that I know better… I can start to do it right. I wish I had known more about this before… telling someone the number should be “less than 200” just doesn’t mean anything… they should have explained the individual numbers to me. Perhaps it would have made a difference… I don’t know… but now that I have a better understanding… I know what to change.

I also need to find out if there are any home test kits… it may be something to look into. Basically… the “health diet” I constructed to loose 60 pounds and get healthy almost killed me.

Food for thought,
Jerry
