Turning your Book of Possibilities into a Book of REALITIES

Book of Possibilities No matter you walk in life, I think everybody will love this movie – to sum it up, Queen Latifah begins the movie living the same mundane life the majority of people around me live – wake up, go to work, go to sleep. She keeps a book of possibilities with her about the life she WANTS but never does anything to turn these into a reality for her. She loves cooking, is in love with L.L. Cool J. (who plays a salesman) and hates the “cubicle” that her boss keeps trying to keep her in. But she sticks her head down and keeps going day by day, week by week, month by month till the years come packing on. Then… a life altering even occurs – she has 3 weeks left to live!

The transformation

In the matter of a week, Queen Latifah goes from mundane towards living the life of her dreams, blows all her money and finally LIVES LIFE. At the end of the movie – predictably – she finds out her disease was mis-diagnosed and uses that as a stepping stone towards making the rest of her book of possibilities into one of realities.

Why I loved “Last Holiday”

I absolutely love these kinds of movies as they mirror how I live my life – I push until I am exhausted then push some more… I do daily actions to make the life I want a little closer towards reality – I jump in head first – usually into a brick wall but every once in a while – a breakthrough occurs. THIS IS WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT!

I wasn’t born on this Earth to spend half of my day in a 4ft by 4ft cubicle working hard while my boss reaps the proceeds of my hard work… AND NEITHER WHERE YOU!

Imagine… then turn it into reality!

Imagine you had 3 weeks left to live, what would you do? What would you say? How different would your life be? Well… why wait? Everyday that you are alive is one less day you will have to live – think of your life as a highway, you are born and from that moment on, you are driving 200mph straight into a brick wall, the only problem is your headlights aren’t on so you can’t see it coming. Nobody knows how long they really have to live… so why wait till its too late to make lasting and positive changes in your life?

The Bottom Line

It’s up to you if you decide to watch this movie or not – but what I do want you to think about today and every single day forth – is – what can I do today to make my dreams a reality before I hit my brick wall?

People CHOOSE to get cancer – 90% of the time!

Cancer sucks! It seems I keep coming to the same themes in my quest to get health information out, I say one thing that sounds like a no-brainer and then a few months or years later, studies come out “discovering” what really is common sense. Cancer is no different.

I didn’t choose to get cancer

Let’s review, as much as 90% of ALL cancers are caused by lifestyle, the other 10% have strong genetic influences, for those unlucky 10%, I am truly sad for your plight and you have my deepest sympathies. If your entire family has gotten breast cancer by the age of 40 – there is a high likely hood that YOU will get it as well. What I don’t understand is why people simply accept this as a fact instead of doing lifestyle changes to reduce this likely hood. No, many people have not chosen to get cancer, nobody wants this condition but they do daily actions (knowingly or unknowingly) that lead to its development 90% of the time!

Two interesting studies to review if you have or worried about cancer

Here is a summary in plain English as to why people get cancer

1) Alcohol, inactivity, bad diet (dare I say fast food) and you guessed it, OBESITY!
2) Every 22lbs of fat you carry around on your body increases your likely hood of getting cancer 18%!!! With more then 50% of the industrialized population considered obese, no wonder cancer (and diabetic) is an epidemic!
3) Environmental pollution causes cancer

http://www.nationalacademies.org/headlines/20060720.html

http://www.nationalacademies.org/morenews/20060727.html

So what have we discovered from these two studies? NOTHING NEW! We all know this already but still society either keeps it head in the sand or does further studies to make sure there where no problems with the first studies. This is insanity!

Here is my list of things people do BY CHOICE to achieve the undesired goal of getting cancer:

1) Breath in contaminated air (smoking, smog, ozone, exhaust, particulate matter)
2) Eat contaminated food (fast food, processed food, junk food and “enriched” foods)
3) Sit on their ASS
4) Live within a contaminated body (if you maintain an unhealthy body, you are a cesspool of cancer causing agents waiting to get activated)
5) Drink unfiltered water (by the time city water gets to your tap, it has picked up so much junk that a mud pond is probably healthier to drink out of, reverse osmosis or distillation is the only way to go)
6) Avoid the doctor and dentist – these are your friends, a problem is easier to fix if you catch it EARLY.

Now, maybe I am being unfair but study after study after study all indicate that Cancer and many other diseases are on the rise, when will our society wake up to the fact that we are the ones causing these diseases! You spend 2 hours commuting back and forth to work… YOU ARE KILLING YOURSELF by sitting for so long and KILLING OTHERS by polluting our collective air.

But I have to…

Most of us live in a free society, we CHOOSE to go to work, we CHOOSE to commute, we CHOOSE to purchase junk food… the CHOICES are endless – if you make choices to stay in an unhealthy environment, then it is a choice. Don’t pass the buck and blame others or your boss, company, society or anybody else out there… YOU must make the choice. How important is your health to you? Well… how important is it? For me, my health is number one, above friends, family… anybody or anything. Without my health, I am nothing and neither are you.

“ME” Society

Right now, we live in a society that is “individualistic”, people prefer their own cars over public transportation, people want their own office instead of sharing, people want their own this, that and everything else. Cancer and many diseases are a warning sign that this kind of thinking is not healthy for any of us collectively as a species… natural selection is simply pecking off the weaker of us (genetically, habitually etc.) as it works it way up. Why are you obese? Because you don’t care about yourself… it’s that simple and guess what, others don’t care about you if you can’t take care of yourself.

Treatment vs Prevention

What does our society do in the wake of an epidemic? Forget about educating the public into doing some real action to prevent it, lets create a multi-billion dollar industry called “cancer treatment” whose sole focus is treating the people who have enough money to be able to undo the damage they have caused to themselves (again, directly or indirectly). We need a REAL change in our world societies, not this mickey mouse half-assed stuff we have done so far because of FEAR. EMBRASE change, don’t fear it!

The Bottom Line

Maybe I sound a bit rash, but I want you to get in your head that cancer in 90% can be traced back to lifestyle CHOICES, no matter how indirect. I am willing to wager that many other diseases would drop off the map as well.

The Albums of our MindI got this in an e-mail from a friend of mine and asked him right away if I can share it with the world… which I have! .

—————
At the beginning of each new phase of our journey, we create a Mental Photo Album of how our life is going to unfold.

When we begin school, we create the Album.
When we join a team, we create the Album.
When we meet and fall in love, we create the Album.
When we get that job or career, we create the Album.

The most significant Mental Photo Album that we create is the life our children will have. The minute they are born and we find out their gender, that Album is cast in stone. Mentally we envision the skills they will acquire, the grades they will attain, the university they will attend and even in many cases, the career they will choose. Some of us go as far as picturing the type of person our children will marry and where they will live.

Think about this. These Photos become indelibly etched in our minds and in many cases these Photos become who we are and what we live for.

Here is where we encounter the fly in the ointment. We have no control whatsoever how the other people we come in contact with have created their own Mental Photo Album. And if that Album is different to our Album, we can have a major breakdown.

Dante said, “We don’t see the world as it truly is, we see the world from where we stand.”

We must keep in mind that our relationships are an ‘add on’ to our journey, NOT our journey.

Unfortunately there are too many variables as we progress along the road of life and because of these variables; the Mental Photo Album that we created will ultimately change. We need to embrace these changes as we embrace the changing seasons.

As life replaces our current Photos with new ones, we should look at these not as aberrations, but as new pieces of art that can transform our Mental Photo Album of Life into a new and wondrous Work of Art.

In the workplace, changing the Photos can lead to obstructionism and conflict. Just because you have been doing something a certain way does not mean that it is the only way to do the job. New Photos can add a new direction and a new vitality to your career.

Like life, imagery has evolved over the years. Paintings and art evolved into still photos and still photos evolved into moving pictures. Remember life is fluid. Allow your Photo Album to evolve and view these new Photos with acceptance not angst. By doing so, every new Photo becomes an adventure and isn’t that what this journey is all about.

Peace…

Ted
