It’s all about PROPORTION: Negotiating your way through life

Life is all about proportionDecisions are like atoms, the reactions they give back determine your fate.

Everyday, we are hit with key decisions which will affect the rest of our day, sometimes they affect the rest of our lives but usually it’s things that we loose perspective on that cause to us make a disproportionate response that gets us in the most trouble.

Are you an Active, Passive or Reactive person?

We only have the choice towards any one decision that we make – using any one can lead towards your goals OR push them further back.

Active: We can actively confront the issue, if you are unhappy with your current pay raise, this reaction would be to go visit your boss and ask him for a hike before he comes to you with a proposal.

Passive: This is not hiding from an issue, just letting it simmer until you either have enough information to make a key decision OR you are currently indifferent with the situation… if you where unhappy with your pay , a typical response would be to do nothing until the next scheduled pay raise.

Reactive: I believe this is the most powerful but also the most dangerous approach towards a situation. Instead of using your logic, you are thrusting your emotional response to make the decision for you. Again, if your boss told you that your pay increase for the year is only 2%, an immediate reaction saying “but I want 5%” may either leads towards an increase somewhere in the middle or being shown the door.

I believe a balanced individual knows when to pick fights and when to stand back… you cannot always be in one of these modes, otherwise you would be in an insane asylum (reactive), homeless (passive) or jail (active) in extreme circumstances of course ;-)

Choosing your weapon is as important as choosing it’s yield

There is a scale of 1-10 with a 10 being an emotional wreck and 1 being calm and logical. Your boss has said he can only afford a 2% raise, you can be reactive with a level head and maybe get that to increase or gain more knowledge… OR using the same reactive weapon at a level of 10, throw his desk to the ground and storm out. You are using the exact same weapon but with a different yield.

Sometimes it’s very difficult to maintain control your emotional to logical ratio. Some decisions like eating yogurt for breakfast instead of a bowl of cereal as so non-consequential that the decision is made without a second thought but other decisions like getting a divorce are so incredibly difficult that you are always one step away from loosing it at any one time.

Dealing with falloff

You cannot look at only one side, sure your cereal can’t say “please eat me instead of yogurt” but most of our decisions in life have another person involved. For instance, your boss who gave you a bad pay raise, you reacted lets say actively at a yield of 5… you got kids to feed and you need the money to make ends meet. You love your job, the environment and the challenges it gives to you but regardless, you are living paycheck to paycheck with no end in sight. Your mix of logic and emotion might be enough to persuade the boss to understand your situation and maybe instead of more pay, they may willing to pay your gas to travel to and from work. There is ALWAYS room for negotiation… but you must be careful to keep the lines of communication open while still controlling where they are leading to. How you deal with the other person after they have presented a counter-offer is as important as your original choice of weapons and yield. Remember, falloff is lethal only in high doses – you can manage the rest.

Keep things in PROPORTION

When ever your in a decision mode, please do not loose perspective as to why you are doing something and how important it really is in your life. Is it worth going through all the emotional trauma of getting 1% increase in pay above what you where originally given to risk your career? Is it worth the physical and emotional turmoil you may be put under should it go the other way and you find yourself on the chopping block? Is your job really so important to you that you are willing to risk it for a far better opportunity? What is more important to you… your family or your job? These and many more are questions you need to ask yourself before you put your first step forward, otherwise you are an emperor with no cloths and you will be called out. Remember, keep things in proportion.

The Bottom Line

Choose your weapons and available yields BEFORE you take the first step… otherwise you may not get the results you are after.

New ventures from passionsThe Adventures of Stinky and Sticky - a new introspective venture into self discovery. http://stinkyandsticky.com - updated daily.

Like many things in life, if you don’t have a passion for it, then the energy required to keep it moving forward will not last.

What is PASSION?

Although there are many branches to describe passion in all our lives, they all come from one root… passion is an undying desire to achieve a goal. There is no scale or motive with passion, it’s either there or not. The incredible power of passion is that it gives the body the equivalent of a nuclear bomb of energy from one simple seed. It gives you focus, temper, forethought and most importantly, a desire that can easily overcome any obstacle in your path. Passion is like a disease, it can be given to others but not all can develop its symptoms.

What are your passions?

I find it very easy to find a passion within an individual, usually it pops up from a simple conversation… passion is the one or two things that make you wake up in the morning, passion is that itch that must be scratched, passion is that spark that ignites everlasting fires… passion is the most overused yet least understood skills us humans have. EVERYBODY has a passion in life, no matter social status, background or intentions (good or bad), there is a passion within every one of us – luckily I have found and developed mine but with a little skill, you can find your as well.

The power of passion

Finding one passion is wonderful but being able to mix and mold them to achieve your goals in life is magnificent! Take for instance my passion for educating people, mix that with a passion for the arts and add in a sprinkle of self preservation (the strongest passion of them all) and you get… stinkyandsticky.com! ;-)

What do amoebas have to do with you? EVERYTHING!

If you ever took a biology class when you where younger or are in one now… the one specimen that is by far the most interesting to watch is the amoebas – they seem intelligent yet have no brain, they seem powerful by their mass yet have no muscles or rigid structures, they are both mortal and immortal, shapeless yet structured… all wrapped into one micro-organisms! They live their entire lives (original or cloned) in the space of only a few inches – their only nourishment is what they bump into… life can’t get any simpler!

What does that have to do with passion and your everyday life? Easy… what amoebas show to all of us is that there is an alternative to our hectic lifestyles, there is nothing in nature that states that we MUST do anything beyond simply existing – we, unlike the amoebas, have an incredible amount of freedom, we eat what we want, we can be anywhere in the world within 24 hours and we can choose to shape our destiny the way WE want – I am not talking about reacting to your environment like amoebas but the true freedom of terraforming it into what you want it to be.

Why did I begin stinkyandsticky.com?

Basically, I want to give people a different perspective on their daily lives, sometimes it will be a much needed laugh, other times a few seconds in introspective thought on where their lives are headed. Regardless of the medium, I wanted to explore another part of myself yet still share it with others to make them think beyond their next meal.

The Bottom Line

There is nothing you cannot achieve in this life, NOTHING… if you have enough passion to make it happen and drive to see it through, you can form the future that you desire.

Unhappy? Drugs are not the answer!

Depression sucksAction leading towards achievement makes a lasting impact against your foes.

In a society bent on the “pursuit of happiness”, it’s no wonder why “happiness” drugs from prescription Zoloft to alcohol are used in almost in every class to escape into a little bit of heaven. No matter you wealth, position or background it’s this pursuit that binds all of us together like nothing else.

What is depression?

Well, according to dictionary.com, depression is the condition of being depressed (leave it to a dictionary to clearly explain something huh?)… but there is more, depression is a condition of feeling sad or despondent characterized by inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, feelings of guilt, helplessness, hopelessness and thoughts of death.

Why do we get depressed?

Drug companies I believe are doing a big disfavor in this regard, there is that minority (like obesity) that no matter what they do, they will feel like crawling under a rock and staying there – for those people drugs are the answer but for everybody else, I believe drugs are the WRONG answer.

Evolutionarily speaking, depression is that stick that gets us off our butts and into action to feel “happy” again. Had a tough day on the Savannah and the kids are driving you nuts? Go hunt for some meat and make everybody happy with full bellies. You must remember that Mother Nature really doesn’t care if we are happy or not, our species survival does not depend on our emotions, it depends strictly on how many kids we can produce for the next generation.

What would happen if we where always happy?

This is like asking somebody what it’s like to always have money, you get use to it and it looses its value. If you are always in “happiness” mode, you will forget what it felt like to be in the “sad” mode so the value of happiness becomes lesser of value to you as time goes on. This is where I have a problem with drugs (prescription or otherwise), if you are always “on”, then you are dependent on artificial means of staying “on” so when you get “off” you crash and burn. Artificial joy is a fantastic recipe for disaster in my opinion… just ask your local drug addict ;-)

Triggers for depression

Lets recap, nature doesn’t care about your depression and if you don’t get depressed then there is something wrong with you (not the other way around). I believe the root cause of depression in a society of plenty is people leading predictable and unsatisfying lives – I also believe this is also the root cause of obesity in our society. Unhappiness about your marriage, unhappiness about your job, tired of kids, tired of dealing with everyday problems… you name it… it all slowly builds up. Instead of SOLVING the problems doing simple lifestyle changes, we have been “marketed” to simply go to the doctor and ask for our “happiness” drugs, or worse yet, go to the local drinking hole and get our happiness by drinking away our sorrows. If you look as our society, avoiding action towards problems doesn’t seem to be working so well.

How to treat depression

I believe that 95% of depression that is not caused by a clinical condition out of the control of the patient can be easily treated by lifestyle choices. If you are in a bad marriage… GET OUT, if you are sick of your house… MOVE, if you are tired of the kids… SEND THEM TO A BABYSITTER AND GO ON VACATION. People saying “well, you can’t do that” are usually the same people who have their own problems as well and fear the unknown. Remember, I “preach” that instability is good for us – and I live what I preach ;-)

Basically, when our lives get so comfortable that they become predictable, that is when the zest for life (ei: happiness) tends to diminish in peoples lives… the longer they do nothing about it, the worst it gets. How do you treat depression? TAKE ACTIONS AGAINST IT… not words or half-assed steps… LASTING ACTION!

My personal bouts

I like every other human have had bouts with depression… I was once in a marriage that was in shambles, my life was a financial nightmare and everything I would touch would turn to muck. Just to give you an idea of how bad things where, I was so stressed out that my appendix decided it had enough and wanted out of my body… a few hours later it got its wish and I am still waiting for the post card of it on a beach somewhere ;-)

How did I get out of it? I didn’t resort to alcohol or drugs, I pushed myself DAILY towards turning things around, got a divorce (toughest thing I ever did), got my diet back into order, did lots of “house cleaning” and looking back today, there isn’t a day that I regret doing what I did… I fear how my life would have turned out if I wouldn’t have stepped to the plate and taken action. Was it easy? Hell no… but it had to be done and like many other things in life, the only person who can change your life is YOU. Since then, I never felt a hint of depression… and that was almost 6 years ago! Action leading towards achievement makes a lasting impact against your foes.

The Bottom Line

Nobody can treat your depression other then you… make the changes you are fearing to make in your own life and you will see that your depression will become a thing of the past.

My… how insignificant we really are!

We aren't that importantLife has no beginning nor any end… it just is. So appreciate the gift you have been given!

In a world bent on being better then our fellow human being, I hope to put somethings into perspective for you and make you think more deeply about yourself.

What are we?

As humans – as with any and every other “living” organism on this moist rock we call Earth – we are all made from the same base components. Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen – the amount and relationships between these three fundamental elements is what differentiates species, races… you name it… in fact, if you look at the ashes from an animal vs the ashes from a plant, using only our human senses, there is no way you could tell the difference.

So to answer my own question, we are nothing special, we are simply living organisms no higher or lower then any other form of life on this planet. A bacteria has just as much “right” to life as we do.

Who are we?

Unlike 99.999% of the other living organisms on this planet, we seem to have developed self-consciousness, meaning we are aware of ourselves. This seems to be a trait shared between most mammals of which we are one of. Does a fish realize that it is alive? If I re-incarnate as a goldfish, I sure hope not! ;-)

The “person” we are is essentially the person we project ourselves to be, no more and certainly no less. Our projection is the reality that others perceive us to have. Need proof? Go to any shopping mall dressed up vs dressed down – you will notice an immediate difference in how you are perceived.

Why are we?

This is the biggest question that we will never be able to answer. It is my belief that we are no more then a collection of incredibly random events… that could have just as easily gone the other way. The consequences of us “being” vs not “being” are indifferent in the grand scheme of things… we are simply the embodiment of one universe realizing its own existence.

So what is the purpose of life?

I believe life has absolutely no purpose, no reason for being, it’s simply chance. There is no love or hate in the universe, simply indifference. Our existence is dictated by events completely out of our control and the universe will neither miss our extinction nor pat us on the back if we discover the secrets of immortality.

Wow… that’s depressing!

Actually, my reason for writing this is to give you the power to realize that you have absolutely NOTHING to loose trying to achieve your goals in this life. You have and will only ever have ONE LIFE… make the most of it. Whether you die tomorrow or 100 years from now, I hope you realize that there is absolutely no difference either way… everything you have done with your life will be forgotten within a few generations and life will move on without you.

I find nothing depressing about facing reality, what I would find depressing is hoping for something that doesn’t exist and realize I have wasted my life doing things that got me no more ahead then behind. I guess either way, there is no difference anyhow ;-)

The Bottom Line

The universe doesn’t care whether it contains life or not – so dedicate your life towards making a mark big enough to make it care!
