Terrorists or Freedom Fighters

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

One persons terrorist is anothers freedom fighterNo matter if it’s from Terrorism or War - the results are the same.

It seems to me watching the news around the world that especially since September 11th, any organization that does something “you” (country wise) don’t like is automatically labeled a terrorist organization with the insinuation that they are full of blood thirsty, instinct driven, uneducated crazy terrorists… ENOUGH!

Definition of Terrorism and Terrorist

The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons. A terrorist is a person who engages in acts or an act of terrorism.

Definition of War and Freedom Fighter

A state of open, armed, often prolonged conflict carried on between nations, states, or parties. A freedom fighter is a person who is engaged in armed rebellion or resistance against an oppressive government.

War vs Terrorism

Notice how “open to interpretation” the definition for terrorism actually is, hence why it is abused by political “leaders” around the world to push their own agendas. In the modern world, countries do not “agree to fight”, one simply attacks the other so the term “unlawful” used for terrorism makes no sense as on the larger front, there is nothing “lawful” about a war either. This whole idea that war is somehow legal while terrorism is “illegal” simply holds no water. The end result or expectations are the same, only the magnitude is different. Both “events” do have multiple warnings but they are sadly ignored before it’s too late.

Freedom Fighters vs Terrorists

One persons freedom fighter is another persons terrorist, just like war vs terrorism, the difference is open to interpretation depending on the side you are on. So one day, the acts done may be considered terrorism while at another time, they may be considered “alright” because you where engaged in a war. Terrorists, solders or freedom fighters, have families and loved ones, usually a solid head on their shoulders and far from crazy roaming idiots our leaders try to portray them to be.

Why do group resort to terrorism?

Countries have armies to settle differences because they have the resources to build and procure incredibly expensive machinery whose sole purpose is war (offensive and/or defensive). Individuals or groups don’t have these types of resources in their arsenal so their “weapon of choice” is what they can find around them, leading to what countries label as terrorist acts such as suicide bombings, hijackings and you name it.

Real-world Example

Now that I have set the rules up, lets see how the game plays out in the real world – I wish history lessons where mandatory for people in leadership roles as hopefully they wouldn’t repeat the same mistakes once more.

Israel vs Britain
60 years ago, Britain ruled over what is presently known as Israel and guess what, the “oppressed” Israelis fought their occupiers just as thoroughly as the Palestinians are fighting Israel in present day. The “freedom fighters” who bombed a hotel (killing 92 civilians inside) are still considered “terrorists” by Britain. What I find humorous is that in “celebration” of the event, Mr. Netanyahu said during a speech that the difference between what these “freedom fighters” did and what Hamas (currently considered a terrorist group) is doing now is that they (Israelis) where governed by morals. Israel now says they placed a warning (which Britain never received), so indirectly blaming Britain for the deaths caused by their own bomb. I don’t understand how a moral organization or person can celebrate the killing of 92 innocent civilians in that one single even (there where many more) – do you?

How to solve terrorism in this world?

Talk, plain and simple… listen to their grievances and see if you can do something about it – deal with the root cause, which I would bet 90% of the time is related to poverty, occupation and desperation. For that 10%, quick, decisive action must be done to deal with the “leaders”, most people in this world are followers, meaning if the “leader” it taken care of – much of the will to fight dissipates if military action is followed directly by an improvement in lifestyle. Problems arise when military actions begin to hit more innocent civilians then soldiers/terrorists.

The Bottom Line

There are no “morals” in war or terrorism, only death and destruction.

Smokers… a generation lost

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

Sadly, people still haven't learned!Smoking is the leading preventable cause of premature death in the United States and many other industrialized countries.

I run a health site – of course my enemy #1 is tobacco related products, followed by obesity and general health laziness – all of which are lifestyle CHOICES that lead to a premature death and dramatic decrease in the quality of life.

My experiences with smoking and smokers

When I was a kid, I was as curious as anybody else and did try smoking – if everybody was doing it (especially back then)… it should be good for me too ;-) Well, I took one puff and my throat constricted and I felt like I inhaled a camp fire as I coughed immediately and vowed to never do that again. As I come from a French Canadian background, smoking seems to “us” as natural as eating or sleeping, when I visit my relatives – they pretty much all smoke (or are in the cycle of vowing to quit). So to me, living a life with nicotine addiction would not have been frowned upon very much.

If smoking is so bad for you – why do people do it?

I have come to the realization of many things in my 30 years of existence, the main factors as to why I think people prefer to slowly kill themselves instead of simply getting a gun and getting it over with are:

Too much EASY time
In the industrialized world, we have all way too much time. SERIOUSLY! Activities that related directly to keeping us alive take up a very little of our day. The challenges of getting supper on the table would be magical even 500 years back… our lives are very automated, from washing cloths to warming up our “food”. This has come at a cost of our own social self-esteem, the pride we use to get daily from keeping our family alive has now been very poorly replaced by “buy-esteem”.

Fear of death
I don’t believe in God or an afterlife, I tell people who try to “convert me” that I prefer to get my fiction from movies. I respect spiritual people but to me, personally, it’s no more then a coping mechanism to deal with our own mortality. I take fantastic pride in myself that I am dealing with death head-on, I truly believe I have absolutely NOTHING TO LOOSE by living the life of my dreams now – this has given me incredible power and self-confidence. I am actually to the point of joking around telling people I know that if there is an afterlife, I will probably ask God to send me back to Earth because I have created my own paradise ;-) People can’t deal with their mortality, they fear dying so what they oddly do, is slowly kill themselves by becoming unhealthy and taking up bad habits… creating an excuse for their own early demise – they fear dying quick but slowly seems OK with them. Makes no sense huh… but that is what I read everyday when I meet people. It’s like being afraid of the dark but slowly building the nerve to slowly step into it, gradation of light by gradation.

Smokers… a generation lost

We have added a new section on myfoodcount.com, it’s within our “famous people, everyday problems” section under Nicotine Addicts. I was surprised how many really famous people died prematurely from smoking related causes… here is a partial list of only entertainers (we have almost 300 so far from all fields of life).

If tobacco related products are so bad to you – why can you still buy them?

I blame this squarely on our government – the “don’t smoke” ads are a joke, they tend to make smoking look like eating cheese, “its not that bad for you but hey, if you want to stop eating cheese, give us a call”. The penalties regarding underage smoking are rarely enforced and worse, the government subsidizes tobacco producers (????).

The absolute impotence of our leaders to make any real decisions other then fighting futile wars makes me quite pessimistic regarding the real value of us “citizens” in the world we live in. Why are tobacco products still freely available? Because the government DOES NOT CARE about your health! If they did, junk food and tobacco products would not be found, especially blocks away from schools!

The Bottom Line

Nobody cares about your health other then you… so you must take the initiative and make it YOUR top priority.

Leading Causes of Impotence

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

Impotent smokers... serves them right!Smoking is a leading cause impotence in men… if cancer and emphysema aren’t enough of a reason to quit smoking - I sure hope impotence is! ;-)

Although I am too young and healthy to speak first hand about the problem of male impotence, I know there are people out there who have suffered in silence regarding this condition.

What is impotence?

I had this condition, I would prefer to call it impotence instead of the new marketing buzzword for it “erectile dysfunction“. Essentially impotence occurs when a man is unable to develop an erection strong or long lasting enough to be able to enjoy sexual intercourse. Sex is one of the few free joys left in life, not to be able to enjoy it must be mentally exhausting, which can aggravate the condition further.

Impotence can be caused by mental or physical issues that usually rise (no pun intended) as us guys get older.

What are the symptoms of impotence?

Essentially, inability to perform sexually. If you are able to have an erection in your sleep or a morning tent – then the cause is most likely psychological. If any type of erection is a task onto itself, you may have a physical condition preventing the blood to build up enough pressure within the penis for an erection.

How is impotence diagnosed?

There is no “impotence test” out there but usually a blood test is done to rule out underlying medical reasons. There are some additional medical procedures that may be required as well such as:

1) Using Duplex ultrasound to evaluate the penile blood flow and look for signs of scaring or calcification in the penile ducts. This procedure is started after the patient has received an injection of prostaglandin which induces an erection.

2) Evaluating the penile nerve which involves the bulbocavernosus reflex test . Essentially for this test, the physician squeezes the head of the penis which should cause the anus to contract immediately – if it doesn’t, nerve damage may be present. If there is a delay in reaction, the physician measures this to evaluate how much potential damage exists.

3) Performing a Nocturnal Penile Tumescence (NPT) using either a snap guage or a strain guage. Most men experience several erections while in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, this tests simply evaluates if these erections are taking place. If they are not, then there may be a problem with either blood supply or nerve damage.

4) Performing a Penile Biothesiometry (PB) which evaluates the sensitivity towards electromagnetic vibrations. Delays or lack of reaction may demonstrate nerve damage.

What are the risk factors for impotence?

Basically anything that affects the flow and quality of blood within your body can become a risk factor. This includes but is not limited to:

1) physical diseases and disorders such as diabetes, high blood pressure, low testosterone levels, kidney or nerve damage

2) physical activities such as riding a bike for too long a period of time, getting hit where the sun doesn’t shine and exhaustion after a heavy workout

3) bad hobbies such as smoking, taking drugs and drinking alcohol

4) bad diet such as eating unhealthy food (like fast food) for an extended period of time

5) mental stress, anxiety and depression – or worse, constantly thinking of something else other then sex!

What is the treatment for impotence?

It can vary greatly depending on the cause and severity of the condition and you should speak to your doctor regarding what is best for you. The treatments can vary from being given steroids (testosterone) for hormonal imbalances to surgical implants. Rest assured, there are a lot of different treatment options available.

The Bottom Line

Suffering in silence does nothing towards solving a problem you may have – seek MEDICAL help before you waste any money on worthless pills and potions that can do more damage then good.

Specialize in your condition

Sunday, July 2nd, 2006

Take your body seriously! As with anything to do with life, who you deal is vital to a good outcome but never limit yourself to only one source.

Get a second (or third or forth) opinion

If you suffer from a medical condition, you should make it a priority to seek help from as broad a resource as you possibly can… never limit your knowledge to only what one doctor tells you.

Before you go to a doctors office, read up and find out more about your symptoms through various online and offline resources. Unless it’s an emergency, you usually have a few days between the time you set-up an appointment and the time you actually meet with your local family physician. Take this time to become your own specialist, try to find medical data to either support or disprove what you may have. There is a wealth of medical information available… use it!

I think it’s best to always let the doctor diagnose you before you open your mouth regarding your self-diagnosis… remember that they are the experts here, not you. Your role is to answer any of their questions then once they are sure of what they think you have, that is when you ask them “I thought I had xyz…. can you please tell me why it isn’t xyz” then sit there and wait for an answer. I think most physicians appreciate somebody who takes their own health seriously. If they have trouble explaining to you in your mother tongue why it isn’t what you thought it was, maybe it’s a hint to ask - “do you mind referring me to a specialist? I just want to put my mind at ease”. Most professional doctors will be more then happy to have their diagnosis confirmed or have further tests conclusively resolve your issue.

Beware of internet or print resources

I know, I just told you to go out to get some information about your condition, but be very aware that there is A LOT of bogus, heavily biased or just plain dangerous information out there. We here at myfoodcount.com have some fantastic resources built just for you to read up more about whatever you may have… use them.

Specialists are your friend

Doctors are highly educated professionals but they cannot be expect to know everything about anything to do with health, there is simply TOO MUCH – there is where a specialist may help you shed light on your issues. If you have cancer, you want to be dealing with an Oncologist, if you have an issue with your kid, a Pediatrician is your best bet. Here is a list that may be useful to you when speaking with your doctor (it also makes you feel smarter at your next visit). ;-)

Anesthesiologist: nesthesia, either general or spinal block for surgeries and some forms of pain control
Cardiologist: heart disorders
Dermatologist: skin disorders
Endocrinologist: hormonal and metabolic disorders, including diabetes
Gastroenterologist: digestive system disorders
General Surgeon: common surgeries involving any part of the body
Gynecologist / Obstetritian: pregnancy (normal or problematic) and women’s reproductive tract disorders
Immunologist: disorders of the immune system and allergies
Infectious Disease Specialist: infections affecting the tissues of any body system
Nephrologist: kidney disorders
Neurologist: nervous system disorders
Oncologist: cancer and some other diseases that resist treatment
Ophthalmologist: eye disorders and surgery
Orthopedic Surgeon: bone and connective tissue disorders
Otorhinolaryngologist: ear, nose, and throat (ENT) disorders
Physical and rehabilitative medicine specialist: coordinate return to optimal functioning in individuals with musculoskeletal and neurological disorders (such as low back injury, spinal cord injuries, and stroke)
Psychiatrist: emotional or mental disorders
Pulmonary (lung) specialist: respiratory tract disorders
Radiologist: X-rays and related procedures (such as ultrasound, CT, and MRI)
Urologist: disorders of the male reproductive and urinary tracts and the female urinary tract

Things to remember

When you visit your physician, be sure to always stay relaxed, an examination room is never a fun place to be in but remaining calm will help tremendously when you

All doctors took an oath when they received their degrees and certificates to help you resolve your medical condition at the best of their knowledge, they are not there to be your friend or your enemy but a neutral party. If they say something that you don’t like, seek another opinion but do not take it out on them, they are simply reading what your body is telling them. Nothing more and nothing less.

Doctors are human as much as the rest of us, they can make mistakes as well as moments of genius, this is why I always think it’s a good idea to know as much as you can about your diagnosis.

The Bottom Line

There is no such thing as a stupid question, only a stupid answer.
